- Ledley (NYGBR 95:24, Gen. of the Bennet Family) identifies Jacobus Bennet's wife, Elizabeth Brouwer, as Elizabeth daughter of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer. This is an error, as Nicholas Brouwer's daughter Elizabeth clearly married John Parcell, with the sponsors for some of their children being members of the Nicholas Brouwer-Jannetje Caljer family. It is apparent from the appearance of Abraham Brouwer, Jr. as a sponsor for this couple's daughter, Elizabeth in 1727, that Elizabeth, wife of Jacobus Bennet, is actually the daughter of Abraham Brouwer and Cornelia Caljer.

Ledley ("Wilem Adrianse Bennet," NYGBR 94 (1964):37,165), who states his birth as "about 1696, probably in Kings County," but offers no explanation or reason for this placement. No record of baptism is found for a son named Jan, and there is no named Jan as a party in the deed of 1743 by which heirs of Adriaen Bennet, by quit-claim deed, acknowledged property to their brother, Arie Bennet (a Jan Bennet did witness the deed). There is no evidence that supports the placement of a son named Jan (John or Johannes) in the family of Adriaen Bennet and Barbara Vonk.7,13

- [S1998] "Records of the Dutch Congregations of Freehold and Middletown", Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey Vols. 22-38 (1947-1963): 24:22, "Church Members." This list, begun at 23:93, is continued at 24:19 with the explanation that the list is "actually a group pf signatures (many of them not holograph, however) to the declaration below, which it does indeed follow in the original record book." Those signing the declaration were 1-Acknowledging Dom. G. Haeghoort as their legal regular pastor and teacher, according to the constitution of the Low Dutch Reformed Church. 2- That they will display and conduct themselves willingly in all respects as members of the Reformed Low Dutch congregation at Friholt and Middletown under the supervision of their pastor Do. Haeghoort. 3- That they will contribute freely from time to time according to their means, whatever is needed to carry on the church and services. In effect, those signing the declaration could be described as Members of the Low Dutch Reformed Congregations of Freehold and Middletown. The first couple of dozen or so names appear at 23:93, 94, as "Church Members," and then are repeated at 24:20 with the above clarification.. Ledley gives "John" Bennet a birth date of "about 1696" and places him as the edlest child of Adriaen Bennet (#10) and Barbara Vonk. However, there is no record of baptism for a son, Jan (John) of Adriaen and Barbara (Vonk) Bennet. In addition, Ledley was apparently unaware of the 1743 deed in which Adriaen's heirs quit-claimed property to one of their siblings (Arie, Jr.). The deed makes no mention of a son Jan, and makes no mention of heirs of a son Jan. Placement of Jan Bennet, a.k.a. John Bennet (#49) in the family of Adriaen Bennet (#10) and Barbara Vonk is lacking proof.. Hereinafter cited as "Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn."

Leldey states, "He is probably the John Bennet who subscribed 10 sh. towards the purchase of the Dr. Barnardus Freeman house in Flatbush on Oct. 8, 1742 (Kings Co. Deeds 5:117). However, of the will of John Bennet of Brooklyn of 1743 pertains to the father of the subject, John no. 20 as we now think, the foregoing item probably pertains to the father. Capt. Totten, following Mr. Bergen (KCo. 29), assigned this will to John the son which is thought to have been erroneous, as discussed under no. 20. That will did not list a daughter Margaret and although the baptism of Margrietje below would fit chronologically as a child of the last marriage of his father, she is assumed to have been a daughter of this John. If that assumption is correct, in the baptism of margrietje below, the mother's given name was Anna but there is no indication as to her surname. (This is the same name as the last wife of John no. 20, hence the wife's name in the will is no aid in its proper assignment)."
The family that Ledley creates for Jan Bennet (#92) and a supposed wife named Anna, is apparently ficticious. The children assigned to the family (#s 240-244) belong to other Bennet families and the Jan Bennet who is more likely a son of Jan Bennet (#20) is Jan Bennet (#45) who married Ida Van Mater. (Jan Bennet #92) has been removed from the genealogy). He would have had to be considerably older then his wife, assuming this family is correct.

Ledley includes Janneka/Jane twice in the genealogy. The first family in which she is listed is the family of "Eleanor Bennet and John Bennet." Ledley is unable to place John Bennet and is of the assumption that Eleanor is a daugter of Isaac Bennet (#73) and Elizabeth Aerson. In actuality she is Helena Van Pelt, the wife of Johannes/John Bennet (#234) who is a son of Jacobus Bennet (#91) and Elizabeth Brouwer. Helena is recorded with her married name (Elena Bennet) in the baptism record of her daughter Janneka. Hereinafter cited as "Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn."

- Johannes Bennet was named in his father's will dated on 14 September 1702 (third son mentioned).6
- His baptism was either delayed, or he was a second son named Johannes born posthumously (with the first Johannes being named in his father's will).
- He was a member of the at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, in 1721.7
- He witnessed the baptism of Maria Couwenhoven , daughter of William Couwenhoven and Ariantje Bennet, on 11 May 1735 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (witnesses Joh: Bennit and his wife).8
- Johannes Bennet and Agnietje Bennet were members of the at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, on 2 April 1740.9
- Johannes Bennet witnessed the baptism of Jannetje Bennet , daughter of Abraham Bennet and Jannetje Suydam, on 11 September 1743 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (witnesses: Joh: Bennit, Agnietje Bennit).10

- Johannes Bennet is claimed as a son of Isaac Adriaense Bennet called "probable" by W. V. Ledley (NYGBR 94:40).15
- W. V. Ledley, in his series on the Bennet family, states that Johannes married an Annetje Couwenhoven, who he theorizes may be a daughter of a Peter Couwenhoven (NYGBR 95:162-163). There is no evidence that such a person existed. His assumption may have been a result of a confusion over the baptism record of a daughter Ariaantje.16,2
- Johannes Bennet and Johannes Bennet, are probably one and the same.

Ledley admitts that he is uncertain about Johannes' life as an adult. His explanations and reasoning regarding Johannes seem to create more confusion. Mentioned is a Johannes Bennet married to a Magdalena Bennet. This Johannes Bennet was likely #85, son of Abraham Bennet and Jannetje Folkerts. It was his first marriage and Magdalena lived only a few years afterwards. Johannes #85 married as his second wife, Styntje Suydam. Johannes #85 and Magdalena, who is most likely #53, daughter of Adriaen Bennet and Barbara Vonk, had a daughter, Jannetje, baptized in Bucks County on 25 Sep 1748. Based upon a deed dated 14 Nov 1768 in Bucks County, a second child, Isaac, is added to the family of Johannes Bennet #85 and Magdalena Bennet. Finally Ledley mentions the baptisms of three children (Maria, Jan and Permelia) to a Johannes Bennet in the Reformed Dutch Church at Churchville for whom no mother is recorded. The baptisms occur in 1757, 1759 and 1760, the last having a Sophia Bennet as sponsor. Ledley is unsure as to why a mother was not mentioned. From reviewing all the baptism records in the Churchville RDC, it appears that when a mother is not mentioned it is because she is not a member of the church and is probably of English ancestry. It may be that this Johannes is John Bennet #164 who was married to Anna Jones in Bucks Co. in 1761. Their marriage may not have been recognized by the church until she became a member. In conclusion, there is no evidence that any of the above mentioned families or situations apply to Johannes Bennet #112/113.. Hereinafter cited as "Willem Adriaense Bennet of Brooklyn."

Ledley makes an agrument for placing Johannes as a son of John Bennet (#131) and an unknown wife. There is no direct evidence for this claim. If his baptism record is considered exactly as it is stated, it is apparent that Johannes is a illegitimate son of Marretje Bennet and that his uncle, John Bennet, Jr., stood as sponsor at his baptism.
