• Simon Le Roy is the progenitor of the families known in French Canada as Roy-Audy, and in the United States as Le Roy and Laraway. He was one of the few, and first, French Catholic Canadians to leave Canada and settle in New York. The family was not of Huguenot origins, although descendants did intermarry with Protestant families. Likewise, the family is not related to the contemporaneous Le Roy family of New York City. Simeon Le Roy first settled in the siegneurie (fief) of St. Joseph, Charlesbourg, near Quebec in 1668, at the timw unmarried, and possibly in the service of the French Army. He moved to Montreal in 1679, and then to Albany, New York in 1681 or 1682. He was at Kingston, New York by 1689, and lived there for the remainder of his life. In Canada, and even at Kingston as late as 1701, he was also known by an agnomen, or "dit" name (nickname) of Ody (Audy, Audi). In early Quebec records he is often referred to as "Simeon Le Roy dit Ody." He always signed his name, "S: leRoy." (Ody is possibly derived from a mild French expletive equivallent to the colloquial "by gosh"). Simeon was a master carpenter by trade, and a Roman Catholic by religion. His children became Protestant (which was the dominate religion in colonial New York) but it is noted that Simeon and his wife stood as sponsor for only one of his numerous grandchildren baptized in the Pretestant Churches. In 1689 when residents of New York were called upon to take the oath of allegaince to the English King, Simeon Le Roy and his eldest son Oliver defaulted in appearance, probably because of the open denounciation of the Catholic religion included in the oath.¹
• In 1669 Simeon's wife Claude and her sister Madeliene Giron, were summoned before the Sovereign Council of New France because of their scandulous talk about the conduct of the wife of Michel Riffaut, on the ship coming to New France. They were required to apologize and pay a small fine. On 13 Dec 1676, Simeon Le Roy bought a lot with an untenantable house in Quebec. He was in Montreal in July 1679 and bought considerable land there fronting the St. Lawrence River in the locality known as "Côte St. Francois." The deed of 2 Jul 1679 calls him a resident of Quebec, but by the thirteenth he was a resident of Montreal. He made additional purchases and sales of land at Montreal in 1680 and 1681. He is recorded as having entered into building contracts during this time, and was contracted as a surveyor to estimate the amount of timber on a parcel of land in January 1681. On 15 May 1681 he contracted with Antoine Guibord and Francois Huart to work for him as sawyers. Simeon Le Roy and his wife appear on the census in 1681, at Montreal, with eight children. His last appearance in the Montreal records is the burial of his daughter Marie, on 21 May 1681. His next appearance on a public record is at Albany on 28 Nov 1682 when he apprenticed his youngest son Augustin, age eleven, to Adam Winne for six years to learn the trade of rope making. Sometime betweem May 1681 and November 1682, Simeon sent his second son Jean to St. Joseph Charlebourg tolive with his god-father Jean Giron, and moved the remainder of his family to Albany, New York. At that time such a trip was usually made by canoe and portage up Lake Champlain, Lake George, and the Hudson River, with the help of Indian guides. The circumstances of his leaving Montreal and New France for the Provence of New York then governed by the King of England is not known, but it seems to have been hastely made and possibly under pressure. On 30 May 1683, and again on 3 Nov 1683, Governor De la Barre of New France wrote that over sixty "miserable disserters" from Canada, "of whom more than half have deserved the ropes," were then harbored by the English at Albany. Eight or nine members of the Le Roy family were certainly a part of this group of sixty. Gov. de la Barre filed a protest with Gov. Andros of New York who replied through Lieut. Gov. Brockholls that all had been done to check the runaways from Canada without passports, and that further measures would have to be left to his successor Gov. Dongan. In 1686 or 1687, Simeon Le Roy was a resident of Kingston (about midway between Albany and New York City). He is found in the records there through 1710. In 1689 he occupied a rented house belonging to Jochem Hendrickse. Before 1701 he had bought a house and lot at Kingston from Henry Beekman. His sons eventually moved across the Hudson to Poughkeepsie, and by 1708 it seems that Simeon fell into reduced circumstances. On 1 March 1708 the Trustees of Kingston provided him with a pair of shoes, a load of wood, and paid for the burial of his wife. He is mentioned on the Ulster County tax list of 1710, and then disapears from the records.³
