  • Erroneously called by some, "Annekje Webber." Although her mother is well known, and documented, the father of Anneke Jans is less so and is said by some to be Wolfert Webber (thus giving her a more remote ancestry possibly as a descendant of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, later William X of Orange and William I of Holland, Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic). This claim was never authoritatively established, and has essentially been proven to be false.
After the death of her second husband, Everardus Bogardus (1647), Anneke, in 1657 removed up the Hudson River to Beverwyck, which is now Albany, New York. There she bought a house lot on the north side of Yonkers (now State Street). She died in that house, probably early in 1663, subsequent to 29 Jan 1663 when she made her will. Her remains were buried in the Middle Dutch Churchyard on Beaver Street, Albany. Her home was sold by her heirs on 21 Jun 1663 to Dirck Wesselen Ten Broeck. A complete translated copy of her will can be seen in the New York State Library, Bulletin No.10, Early Records of Albany, Vol.III, Notorial Papers, 1660-1696, pp.204-206, and also in Munsell's, "Collections on the History of Albany," Vol.III, p.461, and in the New York Historical Collections, Vol. 1895, Abstracts of Wills, pp.487-490. In her will Anneke describes herself, firstly as the widow of Roeloff Jansz of Masterlant, and lastly as the widow of Domine Everardus Bogardus, and as being a resident of the village of Beverwyck. Her will is signed by her mark X, made by her own hand according to Munsell. Her signature is recorded as, "This mark X A.B. is made by Annetie Jans' daughter with her own hand." In the will (as relayed by Totten) she mentions her daughter Sara Roeloffsz, wife of Mr. Hans Kierstded; her daughter, Catrina Roelffsz, wife of Johannes Van Burgh, together with Jannetje and Rachel Hartgers (jointly by representation in their mother's place), children of her daughter Sytge Roeloffsz, deceased, late wife of Pieter Hartgers; and her son Jan Roeloffsz (whom later in the will she speaks of as "then not married"); she also mentions Willem, Cornelis, Jonas and Peter Bogardus (sons by her second marriage). The first four of her children mentioned (Sara, Catrina, Sytge, and Jan) to first recieve between them 1000 guilders out of their paternal estate to be apportioned to them out of the proceeds of a farm on Manhattan Island on the North River (the original grant made in 1633-34 to Roeloff Jansen, their father). The will also mentions her grandson Roeloff Kierstede; her grandaughter Annetie Van Burgh, and her grand-daughter Sytge Bogardus, daughter of her son Willem Bogardus. After these special bequests are made the whole estate to be divided between her living children or their heirs share and share alike.
Anneke Jans has lived on through the more than three centuries since her death, mainly through numerous bouts of litigation and supposed claims to the rights to her properties in lower Manhattan. Excellent accounts of these events can be found in a number of more recent publications including, George O. Zabriskie's "Anneke Jans in Fact and Fiction" (NYG&BR 104:65-72, 157-164, 1973); William J. Parry, "The Heirs of Anneke Jans Bogardus Versus Trinity Church: A Chronicle of New York's Most Prolonged Legal Dispute" (NYG&BR 125:67-73, 161-167, 1994); his follow-up "A Family Feud: The Anneke Jans Claimants in 1831" (NYG&BR 126:105-107, 1995); and in Dear Cousin: A Charted Genealogy of the Descendants of Anneke Jans Bogardus (1605-1663) to the 5th Generation, by William Brower Bogardus (Prescott Press, 1996).

In effect, those signing the declaration could be described as Members of the Low Dutch Reformed Congregations of Freehold and Middletown. However, because of Else's age this can not be the case, as her supposed mother, Marritje Bennet, would have been only 13, at the time of Else's latest possible birth.

Since Leysebet's name is given first in the listing of her parents' children and as there is record of a brother Claes being baptized July 21, 1652, in the Flatbush Dutch Church, she was undoubtedly born about 1650 and thus was about sixteen years old at the time of her marriage.
