E-mail received Dec 1, 2009 from Barbara Boram, "Gerrit Janszen van Oldenburg": "Gerrits Janszen van Oldenburg and Clara Matthijs did not elope. 28 Apr. 1639 one Jonas Bronck is recorded as taken in a maid with name Clara Matthijs.to received board and wages for 5 years. 3 months later Jonas had to appear in court because Gerrit Janszen van Oldenburg wanted to marry her. Bronck claimed damages and was awarded 100 gilders and the couple was married. (from New Nehterland a Dutch colony in the 17th century by JJ. Jacobs.). Fellow bondsmen are also identified as Jacob Brewer of Shrewsbury and John Van Clafe of Freehold, Monmouth County. An inventory of William's estate was also made by Jacob Laing and Elazerus Brewer on 10 April 1772.
This identification of William Van Note as the husband of Magdalena Brouwer is, of course, circumstantial but is also accompanied by the fact that two brothers of Magdalena, namely Willem, bp. 8 May 1687 and John, possibly b. 5 September 1692, married two sisters of William Van Note, i.e., Maria Hennion, nee Van Noordt, widow of Pieter Hennion; and Janneke Van Oort, respectively. It is obvious that the Brouwer and Van Note families were very close inasmuch as both Willem and John Brouwer and their wives appear as witnesses at the baptisms of the children of several Van Note sisters of Willem at the New Amsterdam/New York Reformed Dutch Church.

Abstracted from Flatbush Town Records A:146-47 and 247. Another abstract is published in NYGBR 47:229, reprinted in Long Island Source Records, Baltimore, 1987, p. 108. The author of the article interprets the will to imply that Josyna Verhagen was first married to a man name Cornelis Van Westen and that he was the mother of her daughter Elizabeth. Another interpretation would be that Van Westen is simply a variation on Van Oosten, the name of Josyna's second husband, Cornelis Van Oosten. "Westen" would be an English version of the Dutch, "Oosten." It is unprobable that Josyna's first and third husband had the same name, and the conclusion that Josyna had four husbands (Cornelis Van Westen, Thomas Thomaszen, Cornelis Van Oosten, Rut Albertse) is likely to be incorrect. She more likely had three husbands. Hereinafter cited as "Josyntje Verhagen."
