  • Johannes de La Montagne was born in 1595 at Xanten (Saintes in Provence), France.1

  • He was age 24 when he enrolled as Johannes Monerius Montanua Xanto, on 19 Nov 1619, as a student in medicine at the University of Leiden. On 7 July 1626, Joannes Monerius Xanto Galins, age 30, practicing medicine and living at Jesse de Forest's, registered at the University of Leiden.1
  • Jean Monnier and Rachel des Forests went to Tobago in the West Indies between 1629 and 1631.12
  • He came to New Netherland circa 1636.1
  • First councillor of New Netherland, was appointed Vice Director of Fort in September 1656.7
  • He was a Huguenot physician. He received his medical degree from the University of Leiden, and was the first physician in New Amsterdam. He was a member of the Council under Dir-Gen. Keift, and continued in the role under Dir-Gen. Stuyvesant until 28 Sep 1656, when he was appointed Vice-Director at Fort Orange (Albany). Dr. La Montagne was the schoolmaster of the first public school held in the Stadt Huys, in 1652. He was sent off in the expidition of fifty men to defend Fort Hope (New London, CT) against the Massachusetts Bay colonists. He was in command at Fort Orange when it was surrendered to the English in 1664. It is believed that he accompanied Dir-Gen. Stuyvesant on his return trip to Holland in 1665 after the English take-over of New Netherlands, and did not return to New York.13

He probably lived on Long Island for a short time (two of his children were from New Amersfoort or Flatlands, Kings County). In 1676 Gilles Jansen was rated at Flatlands for 10 morgens of land. He received a grant of 30 acres at Greenwich, New York, laid out on 5 Dec 1679, and patented on 30 Dec 1680.6
