Joseph Holmes1

  • Joseph is named in his father's will dated 28 Apr 1679.3
  • He served as a juror at the court od sessions of Kings Co. in 1695. On 7 Feb 1695/96, with consent of his mother, Ales (or Alse) and wife, Anna, he sold his lands in Gravesend to his uncle Nicholas Stillwell of Gravesend. "In 1704 he bought a farm near the village of Middletown, New Jersey to which he removed." This last statement, by Bergen in Early Settlers of Kings County, p.144 apparently confuses Joseph Holmes with Joseph Goulder. It was Joseph Goulder who bought a farm in Middletown, NJ in 1704. Bergen also gives Joseph Holmes the wives and children that should be matched with Joseph Goulder.4
  • His will was dated on 31 December 1702 proved 12 May 1704, "Joseph Holmes of Staten Island in the County of Richmond, yeoman, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory..." Names eldest son, Samuel Holmes, under age 21; son Obadiah Holmes; son Joseph Holmes; daughter Mary Holmes, under age; daughter Anne Holmes. "Well beloved cousin Jonathan Stillwell and cousin Nathaniel Britting shall be trustees of my children." Witnesses by William Tillyer, Henry Berry, John Dayly. No wife is named.5

  • Obadiah Holmes came to Staten Island from Long Island with, or soon after Nicholas Stillwell. There are records of his being at Staten Island starting in 1670. In 1677 he received a grant at New Dorp. He was the town clerk in 1679, and made the earliest recordings in the town records. In 1679 he conveyed lands to son Obadiah, Jr. In 1685 and 1689 Obadiah Holmes was Justice of the Peace. In 1695 the "Governor's Lot" granted to Obadiah Holmes in 1677 was conveyed to Nathaniel Britton and Elizabeth his wife.4
  • By 1683, Obadiah Holmes was in Holmdel, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, and eventually settled at Cohansie, Salem Co., New Jersey, where he was a Baptist minister.5
  • On 28 October 1695 Obadiah Holmes and Elizabeth, his wife, of Salem County, New Jersey, sold to Nathaniel Britton, Sr., of Richmond County, 96 acres at New Dorp, formerly called the "Governor's Lot," and some marsh and meadow.   • In 1638, Obadiah Holmes, with his wife and son, Jonathan, sailed for New England, landing at Boston, and settled at Salem. He and his wife joined the church at Salem in 1639. He moved to Rehoboth in 1646 after being excommunicated from the church at Salem. In 1650 he again moved, now to Newport, Rhode Island where he became a leader of the Baptist faith, and Pastor at the Baptist Church. In 1651 he was arrested in Lynn, Massachusetts for holding a Baptist service there. He was returned to Newport in 1652, and succeeded Dr. John Clarke as the second minister of the First Baptist Church in America. In Mar 1656 he was one of eight Court Commissioners, and served again in 1658.6
  • His will was dated on 9 April 1681 He calls himself, "obadiah Holme of Newport on Rhode Island," mentions his "daughter Mary Brown, daughter Martha odlin, daughter Liddiah bownd, two grand Children ye Children of my daughter Hopestill Taylor, sonn John Holme, sonn obadiah Holme, grand Children ye Children of my Sonn Samuel Holme, grand Child Martha brown, wife Katherine holme."   • On 2 Apr 1661, "Jan Jemptingh, 25 years old, son of Jeene Hom by her first marriage, and Priscilla Hom appeared before the Board (in New Amsterdam) to settle their late mother's estate. They have two brothers, William, 14, who has gone to Virginia, and another, John, 8, who is with them." They requested that the plantation, house and other property be sold. Joris Wolsy, adiministrator of the estate was given authority to sell the property. Jan Jemptingh claimed possession of the cattle which he said belonged to him as, "old Jan had given him 70 fl. for which his mother had bought a cow, of which the cattle are the increase." He was told to prove it. "Priscilla Hom says she will take her two brothers to her."6
  • In March 1662, "Precilla Homes, and her brother, and one suckling," arrived in New Amsterdam aboard the De Trouw (the Faith).
    Apparently after their mother's death, the siblings made a trip to either The Netherlands or to Virginia.7,8
  • Priscilla Hom and Jan Jampingh appeared before the New Amsterdam court in Jan 1664, requesting monies from the estate of Joris Hom.9

There is no other Samuel Holmes in, or associated with Rehoboth in 1674, who could have also had a son named Samuel. However, the fact that "son Samuel" was named in the 1679 will of Samuel Holmes of Gravesend, adds some uncertainty. Further investigation is needed.

  • His will was dated on 18 September 1705 proved 12 July 1731. "I William Homes of New York, being weak of body," gives his wife, Elizabeth the use of the farm, which at her death is to be shared half by his son George, and half by daughters, Bregie, Jannetie, Judith, and Priscilla. Witnessed by Thomas Codrington, Daniel Blewitt, Henry Penry, Walter Dobbs.11,12

  • On 4 March 1701/2 at Midwood, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, The heirs of the late William Guiljamsz Cornel and Margareta Polhemus, appeared before Johannes Schenck, clerk of the Town of Midwoud, to declare that they had come to agreement pursuant to the final will and testament of the aforesaid. The heirs agree to transfer to Cornelis Willemsz Cornel, a certain piece or tract of land in Midwoud. He was in several skirmished with the British and Torries.8
  • On 22 March 1788 John Hulsart was bondsman at the appointment of John Errickson of Freehold as guardian of Rebekah West of Shrewsbury (daughter of John West of Shrewsbury, deceased).9
