b. 17 March 1672, d. between 31 December 1702 and 12 May 1704
  • Joseph Holmes was born on 17 March 1672 at Gravesend, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.2
  • He died between 31 December 1702 and 12 May 1704.
  • Joseph is named in his father's will dated 28 Apr 1679.3
  • He served as a juror at the court od sessions of Kings Co. in 1695. On 7 Feb 1695/96, with consent of his mother, Ales (or Alse) and wife, Anna, he sold his lands in Gravesend to his uncle Nicholas Stillwell of Gravesend. "In 1704 he bought a farm near the village of Middletown, New Jersey to which he removed." This last statement, by Bergen in Early Settlers of Kings County, p.144 apparently confuses Joseph Holmes with Joseph Goulder. It was Joseph Goulder who bought a farm in Middletown, NJ in 1704. Bergen also gives Joseph Holmes the wives and children that should be matched with Joseph Goulder.4
  • His will was dated on 31 December 1702 proved 12 May 1704, "Joseph Holmes of Staten Island in the County of Richmond, yeoman, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory..." Names eldest son, Samuel Holmes, under age 21; son Obadiah Holmes; son Joseph Holmes; daughter Mary Holmes, under age; daughter Anne Holmes. "Well beloved cousin Jonathan Stillwell and cousin Nathaniel Britting shall be trustees of my children." Witnesses by William Tillyer, Henry Berry, John Dayly. No wife is named.5

Samuel Holmes1

b. 12 February 1668, d. September 1674
  • Samuel Holmes was born on 12 February 1668 at Gravesend, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.2
  • He died in September 1674 at Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
  • He was buried on 13 September 1674 at Rehoboth, Massachusetts.3
  • Son, Samuel Holmes, is named in the will of Samuel Holmes of Gravesend, dated 28 Apr 1679.4
  • The Samuel Holmes born to Samuel Holmes of Gravesend, formerly of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, and his wife Alice Stillwell in 1668, and the Samuel Holmes buried at Rehoboth, "son of Samuel Holmes" in 1674, may or may not be the same individual. There is no other Samuel Holmes in, or associated with Rehoboth in 1674, who could have also had a son named Samuel. However, the fact that "son Samuel" was named in the 1679 will of Samuel Holmes of Gravesend, adds some uncertainty. Further investigation is needed.

The placement of Annatje Holsaert as the wife of William Bennet is based upon the fact that William Bennet, called "brother-in-law" administered the estate of Johannes Holsaert in 1732. It is recognized that there are multiple ways in which two men can be related as "brother-in-law" and this is only one of them.
