The first mention of him in Brunswick records in 1733 when he is
ordered with Thomas, Jr., Tim, and Foster Rives to clear a road
opposite Nathaniel Perry's plantation. (s ee Order Bk. 1, p.
37).
The Vestry of St. Andrews paid Thomas on 10 Oct 1741 100 lbs. of
tobacco to make a coffin for Katherine Harris. He was involved
in serval suits for indebtness and in 1755 petitioned and was
granted to be e xcused from payment of county &
public leview (O>B>5. p. 378). He made a Deed of gift to his
son, Harmon on 24 May 1757 of the second half of his 100 A. on
S. side of Meheren R. acquired by him in 1738.
Nowhere else is more graphically shown the hardship occassioned
by the law of Pimo-geniture. The elder bro., Col. William,
inherited considerable fortune in land and slaves. With the
possible exception of one, all of his family were literate and
well endo wed with property enough to keep them and their
descendants in the "upper crust" of society. His bro., Thomas,
seems to have been less fortunate. With privation and hardship,
yet it was in the person of his grandaughter, Charlotte, d/o
George, that the most distinguished and notable member of the
family appeared. Thomas had 6 ch."
