Unproven yet! Early Colonist - Jamestown VA -1624 FLOURDIEN
HUNDRED VA G626 GREGORY, Richard. a book at the genealogy
library in Salt Lake City called Old Families of Virginia that
details the various off shoots of the Gregory line starting with
a Richard Gregory who was a justice in King and Queen County in
1699 and the father of Roger and Richard. However the trail
stops at that juncture.
9 Dec 1676, John Gatewood received deed from John Grigory for
100 acres in S. Farnham Parish, Rappahanock Co. (Bk 1677-82 p.
127).
"The Lancaster Co., VA, records on John Gregory, Sr., are as
follows:
24 October 1653 - John Gregory was ordered to pay a levy in
Lancaster Co., VA. [Source: Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by
Fleet, Vol. I, page 195]
6 February 1654/55 - John Gregory was ordered to pay a levy in
Lancaster Co., VA. [Source: Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by
Fleet, Vol. I, page 195]
14 August 1654 - William Johnson appeared in Lancaster Co., VA,
court to acknowledge an assignment of a land patent to John
Gregory. [Source: Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by Fleet, Vol.
I, page 195]
6 June 1655 - John Gregory was ordered to view a house build by
Capt. Fantleroy in Lancaster Co., VA. [Source: Virginia
Colonial Abstracts, by Fleet, Vol. I, page 195]
7 December 1655 - John Gregory was ordered to pay a levy in
Lancaster Co., VA. [Source: Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by
Fleet, Vol. I, page 195]
On 22 October 1663 John Gregory received a land patent of 1200
acres in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, on the South side of the
Rappahannock River on the Easternmost side of a creek called
Hodgeskins his creek, adjacent to James Williamson, 600 acres of
which was formerly patented by William Johnson on 10 March 1653
and assigned to John Gregory. This land patent itself cannot be
found. Reference to it is found on the repatent of the same
land to John Gregory on 20 October 1684. (Patent Book 7, page
414)
Note: The 1663 land patent evidently included 600 acres
patented to William Johnson on 10 March 1653 and assigned by
William Johnson to John Gregory on 14 August 1654 and 600 newly
patented acres for headrights.
On 20 Feb. 1663/64 William and Constance Johnson deeded 600
acres on Hoskins Creek in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, to John
Grigory (sic). [Old Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 1656-1664,
Part II, page 288] It is unclear whether this is a separate
parcel of land from the land that William Johnson deeded to John
Gregory in 1654 in Lancaster Co., VA (see above). A witness to
this deed is Thomas Edmondson.
On 27 Feb. 1665/66 William Aires received a 592 acre land patent
in Old Rappahannock Co., VA that was on a main branch of
Piscattaway Creek “above John Gregory.” [Patent Book 6, page
48]
On 16 April 1666 John Gregory “of Hoskins Creek in the County of
Rappahannock, Planter, out of and for the Love and affection I
have for Thomas Edmundson” deeded 8 head of cattle to Thomas
Edmundson. This deed was recorded in Old Rappahannock Co. VA 12
Feb. 1667/68.
On 4 Nov. 1667 Thomas Gaines and Margaret, his wife, deeded 300
acres of his 1030 acre land patent to John Gregory. [Old
Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book 1663-1666, page 295] Witnesses
to this deed were Thomas Edmondson and John Wagganer.
On 27 Feb. 1665/66 Thomas Gaines patented 1030 acres in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA, on Hoskins Creek, adjacent to Hudson and
Holt and opposite to James Vaughan. [Patent Book 6, page 48]
Also, on 4 Nov. 1667 Thomas Gaines and Margaret, his wife,
deeded 335 acres of his 1030 acre land patent to John Morraine.
Witnesses to this deed were Thomas Edmondson and John Gregory.
On 4 Oct. 1672 Edmund Pagett deeded 100 acres to John Gregory in
Old Rappahannock Co., VA on John Wiers’ Creek (aka Mill Creek).
The witnesses were Thomas Robarts and Francis Brown. This deed
was recorded on 6 November 1672. [Old Rappahannock Co., VA Deed
Book, 1672-1676, Part I, page 48]
On 26 Feb. 1673/74 John Gregory and Elizabeth, his wife, deeded
an unknown acreage in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, to Edmond
Pagett. The witnesses were Theophilus Wheale and Mary
Whitechurch. The deed was recorded on 27 May 1674. [Old
Rappahannock Co., VA Deed Book, 1672-1676, Part II, page 204]
An acknowledgment of this deed by John Gregory and Elizabeth,
his wife, is dated 26 May 1674 in Old Rappahannock Co., VA.
[Old Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed Book 1672-1676, Part II, page
_?_.
On 4 Oct. 1675 John Gregory and Hugh Mead received a land patent
for 200 acres in Rappahannock Co., VA betwixt both of their
dividends, adjacent to Richard Hoult and the church path (Patent
Book 6, page 565). Note: It is not clear whether this land
patent is to John Gregory, Sr., or to his son, John Gregory, Jr.
On 9 Dec. 1676 John Grigory (sic), tanner, son and heir apparent
of John Grigory (sic), tanner, deceased, deeded 100 acres in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA, on Gregories’s Creek, adjacent to Bishop,
Henry Awbery, plantation of John Gregory, near Church Road
Swamp. [Old Rappahannock Co., VA, Deed & Wills Book, 1677-1682,
Part I, Page 127] Note: This deed proves that John Gregory,
Sr., died between 1674 and 1676 and that the land involved with
this deed was inherited by his son, John Gregory, Jr.
One 20 Oct. 1684 John Gregory patented 1200 acres in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA, 600 acres formerly assigned by William
Johnson “to the said Gregory,” the entire 1200 acres “formerly
granted to the said John Gregory by pattent bearing date the two
& twentieth of October one thousand & Six hundred sixtie three.”
[Patent Book 7, Page 414] Note: This is patent creates a lot of
confusion. The wording of the patent indicated that the 1684
patentee was the same person as the 1663 patentee. That would
mean that the patentee was John Gregory, Sr. But, as pointed
out above, John Gregory, Sr., was deceased by 9 Dec. 1676. So
how could he be receiving a land patent 8 years after his death?
One possible explanation is that there was some mistake in
entering the 1663 land patent and to correct the records they
correctly entered the land patent in 1684 so as to have recorded
documents that established the chain of title to the land.
Another possible, but unlikely explanation is that there were
three generations of John Gregories, the elder still living in
1684 and the other two being deceased in 1684.
On 18 December 1677 John Grigory (sic) wrote his Will in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA. It was proved on 4 September 1678. More
details on this Will are given below. [Old Rappahannock Co.,
VA, Will Book, 167_-16__, Part __, page __]."
"The children of John Gregory, Sr., who are definitely
documented to have existed were John Gregory, Jr., Mary Gregory,
the subject of this article, Elizabeth Gregory, Ann Gregory and
Richard Gregory. There could have been more. Perhaps a sister,
Katherine who married a Mr. Armstrong. Perhaps there were
others who married neighbors such as Gaines (Games), Gatewood,
Baughan, Hoult (Holt), Fullerton or Johnson."
VA Rent Rolls =
Gregory Nicho James City County 1704
Greogory Frances Widdo King & Queen County, 1704
Greogry Anthony Glocester, Ware Parish
John Gregory, of old Rappohannock County (now Essex County,
Virginia), probably married several times. In January 1674, the
name of his wife was Elizabeth. Mary had two brothers: John
Gregory, Jr. and Richard Gregory; and a sister, Elizabeth
Gregory, who married Thomas Wheeler. (Ref: "Winston and Allied
Families," pp. 237-242, also see notes prepared by Bobbye
Miniard)
