Josie, there are three of us BURKS "cousins" who have been doing extensive research on this line hoping to find a link or two missing on the ancestors. What we have discovered is:

1. John Burk(s) left VA and went briefly to SC and then on to Wilkes Co. GA and was settled there by 1773.
2. When the family arrived in Georgia, it consisted of parents, 5 sons and 3 daughters.
3. Land records show a John & Mary Burks living on Sherroll's Creek, Wilkes Co. GA.
4. We have a biography written by a descendant of Nancy Burks Kendrick that says her father was John Burks. The bio mentions Nancy and brother James Lyon Burks (called him Uncle Jimmie) and his wife Patsy. It also mentions William and Wiley. This is a 35+ page bio that is absolutely wonderful, written about Nancy's son, Benjamin Burks Kendrick, but contains all kinds of helpful information both about the family as well as the living conditions at that time. It begins in 1802 and covers through the Civil War. This bio also says that John, Nancy's father, had land on Sherroll's Creek!

5. I also have a Rev War pension application for Isham Burks in which he says his father, John Burks, was a Capt. in the Georgia militia. He said that his father helped secure him a position in the militia. See note on Isham below!

This work is by no means complete but there is significant progress made on the line. I also have many of the descendants of James Lyon Burks and Martha "Patsy" Robinson. I have worked on her Robinson line and made some progress there as well. Are you related to that line?

One of JLB's daughters went to Union Co. AR around 1845 and married there. I have often wondered what family line was in AR for her to go and visit.

SOME RECORD INFO:
1800 SC Census Information:
Samuel and Roland Burks, perhaps from Henry County, VA., were in Pendleton in 1790 and John Burks was in Greenville District. The family was in Albemarle and Bedford Counties, VA., in the 1750s and Rowland in Henry County as early as 1779. John and Mary Burke arrived from Virginia in Wilkes County, GA in 1773, and there in 1794, Rowland Burks had land on Fishing Creek.
WILKES COUNTY , GA INFO:
John Burks from Virginia and a wife, five sons, and three daughters from thirteen years to three months old 350 acres on a branch of Sherrolls Creek, Wilkes County, land bounty grants.

He also purchased something at the estate of D. Hinton on 19 Nov 1779. John Burks to Isaac McClendon 100 acres on Newford Creek 19 Sept 1787.
Rowland Burks, test.

John Burk and wife Mary to Leonld Phillips 300 acres 19 March 1789
Randall Burks, Thomas Wooten, J.P. testators.

MISC INFO:
James Burks is only mentioned once in Grace Gillam Davidson's, Early Records of Georgia, Wilkes County, Volumes I & II, (which is where the preceeding information on John Burks and wife Mary came from). James Burks of Burke County, Ga. to Silas Mercer of Wilkes County, power of attorney "so far as concerns a bounty of 700 acres allowed me for service in Third Company of Troops" Georgia Militia 11 Feb 1790 Sanders Walker, Howl Jarrett, test.
One the same day he agrees to sell this land to Mercer as soon as clear titles can be made.

EXCERPT FROM ISHAM BURKS REV WAR PENSION APPLICATION:
"Isham Burks, son of John, was born October 24, 1761, in Amherst County, Virginia; the name of his mother is not stated. When very young he moved with his father from Virginia to Spartanburgh District, South Carolina, where he lived but a short time then moved to Georgia and settled in that part which was afterward called Wilkes County, about fifty or sixty miles above Augusta."

Josie, this is just part of the volumes of info I have collected over the past year or so on this line. I would be glad to answer any questions you might have on the above and would appreciate your thoughts on this. Many have readily accepted that this is John Peartree and Mary Kendrick, but I don't think this is accurate. For one thing this John and Mary would have been married and producing children before that John and Mary even married.
Of course, some of the John and Mary Kendrick lines haven't claimed that their John was John Peartree Burks. And so far, we can't prove this John was John Peartree either!! I am inclined to think this John was a son of SAMUEL BURKS, son of SAMUEL & MARY DAVIS BURK. His birth date fits with the birth of that son of Samuel and other names living in and around John fit the other sons names of Samuel.

As always, more questions than answers, but hopefully you might have something to help us in the way of information about William. We have been so fortunate to find bits and pieces of info tucked away in places we really didn't expect to find them! Hoping to hear from you,
Jean

Subject: Re Samuel Burks info/Harrison Repository

I sent this info to Becky about 3 years ago when I was first gathering my Burks info. Our line is descended from Allen Burks b 1771 in VA whose probable father is William Burks.

I recommend you visit the Burks Genealogy Study Group's website at
http://tripod.com/bjcasey

Most of the info I received via snail mail and the internet came from Basil Manley Brenda Watson. Since that time they have updated their info and it is located at this site. I have not been able to link our Allen Burks to this line yet. Denell Burks

William HART Jr.

13 Oct 1805 - ____

ID Number: I42136

  • RESIDENCE: MD and 1828 McKim Dist. Pleasant and Wetzel Cos. VA (1863 WVA)
  • BIRTH: 13 Oct 1805, Baltimore Co. Maryland
  • RESOURCES: See: notes Bio
Father: William HART Sr.
Mother: Mary COURIER

Family 1 : Elizabeth HIGGINBOTHAM
  1.  Willliam H. HART
  2.  John F. HART

Notes

WILLIAM HART -was born in Baltimore county, Maryland, October 13, 1805, and his parents were William Hart, who died in 1822, aged 75 years, and Mary (Courier) Hart, who died in 1848, at the age of 80.

Mr. Hart came to West Virginia, as it now is, in 1828, and resided in Wetzel county till 1840, when he and his brother James came to this locality and bought 500 acres on McKim creek, on a part of which land his sons are now engaged in cultivating as good a farm as can be found in this county.

He has been twice married, his sent wife joining her fortunes with in May, 1852. She was Matilda, daughter of Joseph and Stacey (Barker) Stull, both deceased, and was born in Monongalia county, this State, in August, 1827.

The children of this marriage are: Franklin R., born February 19, 1853, resides in Pleasants county; Enoch L., July 16, 1855, died October 4, 1858; Landora V. (Jewel), March 18, 1857, lives in this county; George W., December 5, 1858, lives at home; Stacey E., July 27, 1862, lives at home; Martha J., July 31, 1865, lives at home; Samantha A., December 26, 1867, died in 1869.

The children of the first marriage were: John F., September 18, 1834; Sarah A. (Masters), March 15, 1835; Sabra E., September 29, 1837, deceased; Mary, June 5, 1839; William H., November 17, 1840; Salathiel, September 4, 1842; Thomas H., February 1, 1845; Josiah, January 1, 1847, died April 21, 1877; Francis M., October 22, 1949, died April 14, 1877; James C., November 7, 1851.

Mr. Hart's first marriage was to Elizabeth, daughter of William and Sabra (Snodgrass) Higginbotham. She was born November 17, 1807, and married December 26, 1833, and her death occurred March 7, 1852.

When Mr. Hart came to this county the land was well covered with woods, and the woods well filled with wild beasts and Indians. Wild game was plenty and neighbors scarce. Most of the people here were living Indian fashion, and being a shoemaker, he greatly astonished them by making a pair of shoes of tanned leather - many of them were wearing moccasins. Mr. Hart was also a surveyor, and helped lay out all the roads in the neighborhood. His old age is now spent in comfort, and he looks upon these pioneer experiences as something to be transmitted to posterity. His postoffice address is Union Mills, Pleasants county, West Virginia.
