"MARY GREGORY’S FATHER: The Virginia records make it quite clear that Mary Gregory’s father was John Gregory, Sr. He was born no later than 1630. It doesn’t seem likely that he was born sooner than 1610. He first seems to appear in Lancaster Co., VA, in 1653. Lancaster Co., VA was formed in 1651, taking land from Northumberland Co., VA and York County, VA. Old Rappahannock Co., VA was formed about 1656. At least part (if not all) of Old Rappahannock Co., VA was taken from Lancaster Co., VA. John Gregory, Sr., died in Old Rappahannock Co., VA between 1674-1676."

Mary's grandfather is the immigrant John Bishopp of 1638 to James City and his wife Mary ?. Mary Gregory, born in 1665, died after 1745, daughter of John Gregory, of old Rappohannock County (now Essex County, Virginia), probably married several times. In January 1674, the name of his wife was Elizabeth. Mary had two brothers: John Gregory, Jr. and Richard Gregory; and a sister, Elizabeth Gregory, who married Thomas Wheeler. (Ref: "Winston and Allied Families," pp. 237-242, also see notes prepared by Bobbye Miniard). Mary Gregory married (2) Rowland Thomas of Caroline County, Virginia.

James married 2) Mary Gregory, daughter of John Gregory son of Roger Gregory who m 1) Mildred Washington, aunt of George Washington.

James and Mary Gregory Taylor were the parents of eight additional children:

"Mary Gregory: Her date of birth is unknown. She was old enough to inherit land from her brother without a guardian when John Gregory, Jr., wrote his Will in 1677 and when she inherited the land in 1678. So I would say that she was born no later than 1659. She married James Taylor of New Kent Co., VA. James Taylor died on 30 April 1698. After the death of James Taylor, Mary remarried to Roland Thomas by 1700."

"John Gregory, Jr.'s will proves that John Gregory, Jr. had a sister, Mary Gregory. On 21 October 1687 James Taylor “of New Kent County” received a 744 land patent on the South side of the Rappahannock River, 480 acres formerly granted to Mr. Henry Abery, who sold to Mr. Robert Bishopp, who bequeathed to John Gregory, who gave to his sister, Mary, now the wife of said James Taylor, adjacent to Indian Path (aka Abrey’s path), fork of Gregory’s Creek, Richard Gregory, John Gatewood, Rowleing Road, 246 acres for the transportation of 5 persons including James Tayler and Robert Jones.

Note: This land patent proves that Mary Gregory, sister of John Gregory, Jr., who was devised this 480 acres by the Will of John Gregory, Jr., in 1678 was the same Mary Gregory who married James Taylor on 10 August 1682. It also proves that James Taylor and his wife, Mary, were living in New Kent Co., VA, in 1687. (?Is the 480 acres part of this patent that came from Henry Awbrey, the same 480 acres that was involved in the other 480 land patent to James Taylor on 21 October 1687 (see above)?"

"Mrs. Winston was the wife of Isaac Winston, a large planter who lived near Spring Valley. Her maiden name was Catherine B. Jones, so states one of her great granddaughters, Miss Burt of Tuscumbia. The Isaac Winston was among the most elegant in the county, being a brick mansion seated on a low hill near the foot of Little Mountain and commanding a lovely view of the valley. It was called "Belle Monte" and no doubt many gay social functions were held there in the days of "auld lang syne." This was from Alabama Historical Quarterly, Winter Issue, 1945."
