In this same section of the Valley (Jefferson County) lived
Edward Lucas, who removed from Bucks County, Pa., and settled
some time prior to 1740 on a plantation which he named "Cold
Spring." Robert Lucas, father of Edward, came from Deverall,
Lingbridge, Wilts, England, in 1679 and was a member of the
Pennsylvania Assembly in the early days of the "Holy
Experiment." After Edward Lucas removed to Virginia he attended
Tuscarora Meeting and took an active part in the Friends'
settlement in that part of the Valley. He was the grandfather of
Robert Lucas, eleventh governor of Ohio; the great-grandfather
of Edward and William Lucas, both of whom were elected to
Congress from the Valley district; and the
great-great-grandfather of Daniel Bedinger Lucas, United States
Senator from West Virginia."
