William Henry HAZEL

9 Oct 1837 - 2 May 1862

ID Number: I24860

  • OCCUPATION: C.S.A. Co D & M, 27th TX Cavalry "Whitfield's Legion"
  • RESIDENCE: MS & Sumter Co. AL & Fayette Co. TX
  • BIRTH: 9 Oct 1837, MS
  • DEATH: 2 May 1862, KIA Columbus, MS
  • BURIAL: CSA Sec, Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS
  • RESOURCES: See: [S896]
Father: Seth Fields (Seth F.) HAZEL
Mother: Caroline Matilda BUCKHOLTS

Notes

"The family returned from TX to MS (Madison Co.) during the fighting with Mexico. He died 2 May 1862 in the Civil War.

Will Hazel, b 1837: William Hazel's company M, 27th Texas Cavalry (Whitfield's Legion) was composed mainly of enlistees recruited at Hallettsville, TX January 1 and March 1, 1862. Company M was organized April 14, 1862, by the transfer of one hundred thirteen men from Company D. William died May 2, 1862, age 24. (notes from Lavaca Co, History book on Whitfield's Legion) Buried in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS along with a lot of other Confederate soldiers. He is listed as a part of Co D (from which Co M was formed). (List of soldiers provided by Texas State Library) In a history of Whitfield's Legion it is recorded that after the March battle near Fayetteville, AR, there were many casualties, and as the troops were sent southeast to Little Rock and beyond there were many who fell ill. As the troops remained there and even after when they were sent east of the Mississippi, men died and were buried in Little Rock and other towns in unmarked graves along the way. William apparently survived until May 2nd, though the story seems to be that he died of disease rather than in battle." [S896]

Notes

In 1934 The Shreveport Times carried a feature article and individual pictures of 20 young men dressed in tuxedos "Who Pepped up the 70's". David A. McCants was a member of a dancing club, The Shreveport Snips, a name given in derision by an outsider but adopted with glee by the young men, and from then on wore their gold club pins enscribed "ss". Their favorite, The Blue Danube Waltz, was often played at their formal affairs held each month in Talley's Opera House. Ice cream and cake, the usual refreshments for the dances, were furnished by Jules Guerre, who had a soda fountain on Market Street.
