While a young child her mother was accused and acquited of
murdering her father in 1829 (had been left a hugh estate from
his father in 1828) and as a consequence her mother moved away
to Indianapolis, Indiana where her father lived; While she was
quite young two of her sisters died; her husband died when she
was only 34 years old; and when her son Abel was just 19, he
committed suicide. This lady, who enjoyed in her childhood the
gracious life of a southern plantation home devasted by the
Union invaders, was reduced to near poverty and earned her
living nursing in a hospital when she was an older woman.
