Pickens, Andrew
Pickens, Andrew, 1739–1817, American Revolutionary soldier, b.
near Paxtang, Pa. He moved (1752) to South Carolina and took
part (1761) in frontier warfare against the Cherokee. During the
American Revolution, Pickens rose in rank from captain of
militia to brigadier general. He took part in the victories at
Kettle Creek (1779) and at Cowpens, Augusta, and Eutaw Springs
(all in 1781). Prominent in local politics, he served (1781–93,
1800–12) in the state legislature, was (1793–95) a U.S.
Congressman, and frequently served as commissioner for Native
American relations in the South.
