Mother: Elizabeth SCREVEN |
"Greetings; I, John McCants of Prince Frederick Parish, Craven
County-planter-for love and affection for my sister, Abigail
Smith, and my cousines (he named them but instead of being
cousins they were probably nieces and nephews, children of
Abigail) John, Elizabeth, Samuel and Hannah Smith of the same
parish and county assigns all and singular the cattle now in my
possession marked as follows, a short crop in one ear and the
other long with an under half penny and branded thus "I.S."
Sealed and signed in the presence of John McCants (Jr.??)
Signed: 31 May 1759-the 32 year of King George II; Signed
(witnessed): Joshua Screven and John Commander.
[email protected] wrote: "Danny Haralson, in his book on the
Harrelson family, states that Hannah Commander had a sister
(Abigail, I believe he states) who married Benjamin Harrelson.
He cites no proof, indeed does not even make any argument for it
- just states it as bald fact and I have no idea what it was
based on. I have Harrelson ancestors here in Marion County, SC.
And they purchased large tracts of land prior to 1769 here on
Buck Swamp from Elisha and/or Hannah Commander Screven, or as
some documents infer from the estate of Elisha Screven. None of
the deeds seems to have been recorded."

May have been known as "Mittie". There is a list of children of
Ivy F. Steagall in this reference, but Eliza is not mentioned
directly. All of the other children are mentioned, plus the
name "Mittie". Therefore, I assume that that must be Eliza and
was nicknamed, for whatever reason, "Mittie".

Eliza married Willie M. Bishop about 1859 in Spalding County,
Georgia.3, 11, 13 Willie died about 1861 3.
From James Ivy Lavenders 1937 Ltr: "My mother was three times
married. Her first husband, Willie M. Bishop was killed in the
first part of the civil war and during the war she and my father
were married and in November of the same cruel war my father was
also killed.
My mother lived a widow then until I was in my eighteenth year
and she married Abe Crow. A well to do farmer of Rusk County
and I do believe that he was as good a man as ever lived.
My Grand Parents on both sides were well to do until the war
broke most of the people in the south. But still those my
uncles and aunts many of them being grown and able to take care
of their own affairs continued in easy circumstances but those
of us left fatherless most of them found little of this worlds
goods to show for what our parents and grand parents ever had.
To my mother's first marriage there was born two children, My
half brother Willis Thomas Bishop now living in San Angelo,
Texas and my sister Fannie Bishop who died in Dallas, Texas
March 31, 1874."
