Notes

"John received a land grant in Amherst Co, VA where he moved his family. His brother Milbourn moved his family to Albemarle Co., VA about the same time. John and Lucy had a very large family. John's oldest son was John who married Sussanah and was a veteran of the revolutionary war. It seems like John Jr. was the one who died in 1786 and that John Sr. died about 1800. (I'm doing most of this from memory and need to dig out my records.)

John had a lot of children; John was the only Hogg in the region at the time.

Subject: Re: John Hogg question Date: Sun, 09 Sep 2001
Here are a copy of my notes from PAF on John Hogg Sr.
"Land Grants for Albemarle county, VA film 029,364 Salt Lake Family History Center, shows John Hogg receiving land 14 Apr. 1756. "Amherst County is formed out of Albemarle County in 1758.
"10 July 1766 John receives another grant in Amherst Co., 63 acres.
"1783 Census Amherst Co., VA. Hogg, John 13 whites no blacks, Hogg, John 4 whites 0 blacks
"1785 Census Hogg, John 11 whites 0 blacks
"1810 Census Hogg, John 1 male 16 - 20, 1 male 40 +, 1 female 20 - 40."
Somewhere, though I can't seem to find it right now, there is a reference that John came from Hanover Co., VA. There is a Milbourn Hogg in Albemarle Co., VA. that I am convinced was John Sr's. brother. In 1777 Milbourn buys land in Albemarle Co. In one deed it lists Milbourn from Hanover Co., VA.
These are the potential children of John Sr.
1. John Jr. He md. Susannah 14 Apr. 1779.
2. Elizabeth Hogg md. Zedikiah Shoemaker 12 June 1783
3. Betsy Hogg md. William Goff 8 Jan. 1784
4. Lucy Hogg md. Capt. William Sledd 21 Aug. 1786
5. Sarah Hogg md. William Rice Key 1784/1787
6. Milbourn Hogg md. Martha.
7. Betsy Hogg md. Doc. Jesse Bennett 5 Apr. 1793 in Rockbridge Co., VA. I realize this is a 2nd Betsy. I'm certain that one of them is a daughter and that the other is related.
8. Randolph Hogg md. Mary (Molly) Goodrich 27 Dec. 1797
9. William Frederick Hogg md. Polly Nicely 18 Sept. 1801
10. Samuel Hogue md. Delaney (Laney) Noel 5 Nov. 1804.
11. Nancy Hogg
12. Mary Ann Hogg md. Rosemerry Gue 9 Mar. 1807. Mr. Gue was a witness on one of Samuel's deeds implying a close relationship.
I have very little proof but a lot of educated speculation on John Sr.'s family. I know that John was married to Lucy, I don't know if it was Lucy Ann Phelps. They were probably married and started their family in Hanover Co., however, it could have just as easily been Albermarle, because Amherst was formed out of that county after they had moved there. When you take a look at the size of John's family in the census record and link that with marriage dates, land grants, deeds, wills, and probate records the family truly starts to take shape.
Have a great day and I hope that this information will be of worth to you.
Sincerely, Gary W. Hogue

Duncan King MOUZON

1837 - 1905

ID Number: I33447

  • OCCUPATION: CSA; Wee Nee Vols & Calvary
  • RESIDENCE: Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • BIRTH: 1837
  • DEATH: 1905
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1246]
Father: Samuel Ruffin MOUZON Sr.
Mother: Martha Fowler PRESSLEY

Family 1 : Emma SMITH

Notes

"Dunkin King Mouzon was named for his father's friend, Chancellor B. F. Dunkin (one of S.C.'s greatest lawyers) and Samule V. King. He was a Confederate soldier. He commenced in the Wee Nee Vols. And ended in the Cavalry arm service. He was faithful and true, and did his share in our unsuccessful struggle to establish an independent government. I saw him and some of his family in 1885. He manifested the same regard for me which he had done since he was a small boy. Dunkin is not a rich man, except in children. The Lord has promised "that the wife of the righteous shall be the mother of many children" and in this respect "Dunk" has been peculiarly blessed.

Dunkin King Mouzon married (1837-1905) Emma Smith. They have a large number of children, innumberable to name. Dunkin lives on a part of the Samuel R. Mouzon estate lands. His father was a very extensive land owner."
