Our first definitely identified Collinsworth ancestor was William who left VA, stopped in NC and went on to SC. He named his two oldest sons Thomas and John. Wm was in Brunswick Co., VA in the early tax records. He purchased land there in 1779 and sold it in 1788. In 1785 he is listed on the census (tax list) of Warren Co., NC just across the state line.

Next door to him was the household of Stephen Shell, Jr. By 1788 Wm and Abba were in Northampton Co. NC; In the 1790 census he is found in the 96th District, Newberry Co. SC. In 1791 he purchased land from Bartholomew and Jean Johnson for 100 lbs. sterling cash.

Estate records show, his son-in-law Samuel Stegall was admin. of the estate. "the condition of this obligation is that the above Samuel Stegall shall carefully and handsomely bring up said John, Elizabeth, and William Collinsworth during their minority and non-age, etc. The condition of the obligation being Francis Hatton shall carefuly and handsomely bring up Hannah Collinsworth during her minority and non-age.
