Rev Wm Screven and his Congregation of Dissenters from the
Church of England were the first permanent settlers in the
Winyaw section. They organized Prince Frederick's Church in
1713. Samuel, Joseph and John Commander were among the names
who settled in Winyaw along Black River and Black Mingo from
1700 to 1736.
Samuel Commander, an early settler, received 400 acres in 1702
and another 270 acres in 1711. His will of Sept 17, 1733 was
witnessed by Joseph Roper who married Mary McCantz of
Williamsburgh Church (she was a dau of one of the immigrant
McCants brothers).
He was the father of Samuel, the eldest; Dorothy, married John
McCants; Joseph, Abigail, married John Smith, Rachel, married
William Brockington, Jr. and then a McCants; Frances, married a
Boutwell. (others show Elizabeth m. Boutwell & Frances m.
Dunham).
Samuel's wife was Elizabeth, whose grandson Samuel Smith when
quite elderly said that his grandmother Elizabeth Commander
lived to age 88 and had ten children (HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
by David Ramsey).
On 1&2 June 1736 Samuel Commander the younger, Elizabeth
Commander, Elisha Screven, and John Commander sold lands to a
Josiah Smith for 1540 pounds the money to be made available for
the use of Abigail, Dorothy, Frances, and Rachel, the daughters
of Samuel Commander, the elder.

brother Jospeh Matthew Commander sues the executor of John
Harvey for their inheritance, in Albermarle, Paquotank, NC.
