After the war, Richard Taylor persuaded his friend Joseph L. Brent to stay in Louisiana. Brent married Rosella, the daughter of Duncan Kenner and Nanine Bringier.


Myrthe, the fifth daughter, m. Gen. Dick, TAYLOR, of Fashion plantation, President TAYLOR'S only son, and was survived by three daughters, two of whom intermarried with the STAUFFER family of New Orleans. [S765]

"Daniel Jenifer Smoot acquired a considerable estate, his realty being assessed at $9,000 in 1850, and his plantation being stocked with more than 25 negro slaves. In 1860 his personal estate was appraised at $28,030, and his post office address was Madison Court House. His wife died April 16, 1860; he died August 8, 1865.


The will of Daniel Jenifer Smoot was dated August 5, 1865, and proved in Madison County, Virginia, August 24, 1865, by Andrew Carpenter and Benjamin H. Sparks. He bequeathed to his daughter Catherine M. Gibson the land near Good Hope Meeting House adjoining the land of Reuben Tucker and the Poor House, containing 210 acres, and also personal property. To his grandson Jenifer Smoot, he devised his riding mare. The residue of his lands was to be divided among his children-- Theophilus Smoot, Horace Smoot, Elizabeth J. Sibert, Frances B. Plecker, and Catherine M. Gibson. He named his friend and neighbor William A. Hill as executor.

Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission: Historical Marker: Trabue's Tavern "This was the home of Lt. John Trabue Revolutionary War Soldier and patriot and of his descendants well into the 20th century. Trabue witnessed the surrender of the British Forces at Yorktown in 1781 and later became an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in Virginia. The Trabues were among the principal coal-mine proprietors in the Midlothian area and here maintained a Tavern that was patronized both by travelers and by workers form mines in the vicinity.


John's will dated 27 Apr 1791, Chesterfield Co. VA Will Bk 4 pp. 383-385; he names wife, Magdaline & Children: William, Anthony & Frances; he also names the chilren by his first wife: John, Jacob, Thomas & Polly. He bequeathed "all my tract of land on Buckingham Road where Blackwell and Moles now live" to his son: Thomas Elmore. (Trabue Tavern) [S1464]
