"Pronounced "Oree". Decended from French Huguenot Family. They fled France on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The famous arthour, Washington Irving,-who was a friend of her husband- once referred to Anne Horry in a letter, as follows: " I have been introduced to Mrs. Dent by her husband. I won't speak all that I think of her, you would accuse me of hyperbole, but to say that I admire her would be too cold, too feeble. I think she would be a belle in heaven itself. She possessed ledgendary bueaty."


Upon the death of her husband in 1823, she and her seven children moved to Charleston so that the children could be educated.. She lived from 1841 to 1845 in a house located at 418 Wickman Street in Walterboro S. C. Many additions were subsequently made. It was then owned by her son in law, Dr. Thomas Lining. The home has been featured in Southern Living and was owned in 1993 by Dr. and Mrs. David W. Hiott."
