SC Council Journals, Vol 15, p 69-70, 18 Nov 1747 George Hicks presented a petition stating that he had lately arrived from VA with a Family consisting of nine whites and eleven blacks, is willing to settle and cultivate part of his majesty's lands praying that he may obtain grants in p proportion to the said number and being informed that a tract of land containing 4000 [sic, should be 400] acres was surveyed in the Welch Tract for James Griffith by virtue of a warrant dated 6 Dec. 1745 requiring the same to be returned into the secretary's office for a grant in 12 months a platt of which has passed the surveyor Genl above a year ago but no return thereof made into the Secretary's office. And the said Griffith having some time ago left this Province and as reported & Generally Believed has since come to an untimely end. Whereupon the Petitioner prays his Excellency & Honorables to direct the Surveyor General to certifie the said platts in his name and that he may obtain a grant thereof,. . .The Petitioner also asks for two other tracts of land in the Welch Tract, one containing 200 acres, the other 100 acres surveyed for James Jones by Virtue of a War't dated 12 Feb 1745 requiring a return into the Secretary's Office in 12 months which said platts were returned into the Surv. Gen Office 9 Mar 1746 where they now lie and no application made for the same. . .
Upon examining the said petition and inquiring into his family right it appearing that 3 in whose right he had petitioned were not of his own family 2 being his sister's children [probably the children of his sister Martha Bedingfield] and the third his overseer, it was ordered that the Surveyor Genl. do certifie the Platts prayed for in the name of the petitioner and that 150 acres may be surveyed for him in the Welch Tract. (Mrs. Lidwin adds a note that the Brunswick Co., Va deed show George sold property in Oct 1747 and was "about to remove from the colony". ]
On 28 Nov. 1747, p 76 Eliz. Griffin was presented and asserted that the Petitioner being a widow with 10 children having nothing else for herself and them to depend on save a tract of 500 acres of land in the Welch Tract surveyed by virtue of ye Exc. warrant and return'd into the Surveyor General's office and by him certified & delivered out of the said office, but no Grant having passed for the same ye Petitioner understands that your Exc. & Hon's have ordered the Surveyor General to Certifie the said platt in the name of Geo. Hicks that a grant may pass to him for the same.(p77) She asked that a grant should be prepared in her name and that of her children, and suggest allow to the said Hicks the like quantity of 400 acres elsewhere in the Welch Tract. The Council then decided that the order to Geo Hicks for 400 acres of land in the Welch Tract formerly surveyed by Jas Griffith was obtained by a Surprise and therefore ordered that the same be reversed and that the Deputy Sec.ty prepare a Warr't for Elizabeth Griffith for the said tract of land in the following manner. Vizt. To Samuel her oldest son 100 acres and the remaining 300 acres to herself and 3 younger sons James, Michael, and William and that the fees be paid out of the Township Fund.
On 22 Jan 1747/48 Grants were signed by his Exc. in Council to Saml. de Saurency 483a in Welch Tract Craven County. To Michl. and Wm. Griffith, sons of James Griffith decd. 300 acres in Welch Tract, etc. To Geo Hicks 100 a ditto, to Geo Saunders 540 acres ditto, to Geo. Hicks 200 acres ditto.
George Hicks is buried at Saw Mill Baptist Church (very early turned over to a Negro congregation) near Bennettsville, SC. This is also the resting place of General Tristram Thomas related by marriage [according to Mrs. William L. Hicks in mss at Hartsville Research Library]

Charleston Deeds, VV-330, 31 March 1759. George Hicks, Sr. to George Hicks, Jr, both of Craven County 350 acres in the Welch Tract in Craven Co., along Peedee River, which tract was granted John Hicks on 18 Jan 1745 by Gov. James Glen; & sold by John Hicks on 4 June 1748 to George Hicks, Sr., Wit: Henry Bedingfield, Robert Graves. ( It is quite likely that John Hicks was the brother of George, Sr., and that Henry Bedingfield was the husband of George Sr.'s sister Martha.)
George Hicks left his South Carolina plantation to his wife during her lifetime and to go to his son Robert at her death. Robert predeceased his mother and the plantation then reverted to George's oldest son James in Brunswick Co., VA. James later sold it to Col George, his brother. The will is found in Charleston County Will Transcripts, Vol 9, pg 287. Roll 023474. The will was witnessed by Henry Bedingfield and his son Robert was his executor. The will was proved by "virtue of a Dedimus before Abraham Buckholtz, Esq the 25th day of May 1762. At the same time Robert Hicks qualified as Exor. The will does not mention Lucy or James, but as the oldest son James would have inherited under primo-geniture. Lucy probably received a gift on her marriage. Recorded in Charleston WB 1760-1767, on P. 196. The text of the will follows:

Col. James SANDIDGE "the Immigrant"

ABT 1620 - ____

ID Number: I16892

  • TITLE: Col.
  • RESIDENCE: England and abt 1653 TO VA and KandQ Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1620, England
  • DEATH: Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: Likely Ancestor or relative notes [S515]

Family 1 :
  1. +John SANDIDGE I

Notes

1. Col James Sandige b abt 1620 in England reportedly left England for political reasons during the reign of Oliver Cromwell (1653-1658) and immigrated to America where he settled in K & Q Co. VA.

2. John Sandidge b 1625 in ENG, also reportedly left England for political reasons and immigrated to America where he settled in London (?) Co. VA and married Dorothy Cary.

3. Thomas Sandige immigrated to America m. Mary Brazier (1644-1698).

2nd Generation - 1660 to 1730
John b 1666 VA
James b abt 1660 VA, m. Elizabeth Pleasants and resided in Henrico Co. VA. Children: Richard of Surrey b 1710; Thomas b 1685; James b 1687.
Thomas b 1660 VA.

According to Sandidge Family Notes by Paul Sandidge York MD, Glasgow, KY pub in 1947: Colonel James Sandige (Sandidge spelling of the name adopted after the Revolution, name also occurs in early records as Sandage, Sandridge, etc.) settled in King & Queen County, VA about 1650 - details concerning his life are lacking at present. He came from England, but from what part or under what circumstances the author is unable to state.

The spelling of Sandidge varies from Sandige, Sandize, Sandridge & etc. From the Morman library I found James Sandidge christen July 9, 1693 at St John, Hackney, London, England. Next there was a James Sandige christened Feb. 16, 1633 at St John, Hackney, London, England whose father was John. Then there was a John Sandige christened March 1, 1612 at St James, Clerkenwell, London, England whose father was William. Also found a John Sandige christened Sep. 23, 1608 at St. Peter, Nottingham, Nottingham, England.

Col James Sandwich of England is not a proven ancestor. Pg 651 of Viking that there was a mention about James and John Sandidge/Sandwich leaving England.
