The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following casualty details:
'Philbrook, James George. Nationality Canadian. Rank Private. Regiment Highland Light Infantry of Canada, R.C.I.C. Age 23. Date of death 20/10/1944. Service No. A/37688. Son of Cyril William and Emily May Philbrook, of Port Credit, Ontario.4,5,6,7' He was buried at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium; Grave/Memorial Reference VIII. A1. Commonwealth War Dead.
Historical information on the cemetery: 'In the last week of September 1944, the Allies held the city of Antwerp, but the Germans held both shores of the Scheldt estuary, so that the port of Antwerp could not be used. The task of clearing the southern shore of the estuary was allotted to the 3rd Canadian Division, aided by the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and the 52nd Division. Their operations lasted from October until the beginning of November 1944; by 3 November the Germans had been cleared from the north-west corner of Belgium and the south shore of the Scheldt was free. There had been fierce fighting for two weeks for the crossing of the Leopold Canal. The majority of the men buried at Adegem died during the operations for the clearance of the south bank of the Scheldt, but many Canadians who lost their lives elsewhere in Belgium were also brought here for burial. A number of isolated graves from various communal cemeteries and churchyards in Belgium have also been brought into this cemetery since the end of the war. The cemetery now contains 1,119 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and one unidentified burial of the First World War. There are also 33 Polish and two French burials.1,8,9'

James Renwick Harvey was born in 1861 at Co Down, Ireland.1,2 He married Matilda Gilmour on 14 October 1890 and an announcement was published four days later in the North Otago Times which read:
'Marriage At the Manse, Papakaio, on the 14th instant, by the Rev. John Steven, James Renwick Harvey, son of John M'Culloch Harvey, Drumlough, County Down, Ireland, to Matilda (Tillie), granddaughter of the late Robert Gilmour, Ballynagg, Coleraine, County Derry, Ireland.3'
He was recorded in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Canterbury Province, published in 1903, under Lyalldale as:
'Harvey, James Renwick, Farmer, “Lismartin,” Lyalldale. Mr. Harvey was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1861. He remained on his father's farm till he was seventeen, and in 1879 came out to Lyttelton by the ship “Waimate,” and found employment for a number of years in the Oamaru district. He was afterwards farming on leasehold land for seven years. Having sold out, Mr. Harvey went for a trip to the Old Country, and was absent for nine months. On his return he was shepherding near Gore for six years, but owing to the state of has wife's health he had to leave the district, and take a trip of about nine months duration in the North Island. He returned to Oamaru for a short time, and in April, 1900, finally settled on 245 acres, under a lease in perpetuity, at St. Andrews. Great improvements have been effected on the property, including fencing, ploughing, a residence, and out-buildings, Mr. Harvey was married, in October, 1891, to a daughter of the late Mr. James Gilmour, of County Down. Ireland. Mrs Harvey died on the 3rd of April, 1902, a short time after her little daughter.'
Family historian Linda Gilmore writes 'Note: Matilda's father might have been David (James Gilmour of Ballynagg was her uncle and he never married) and Harveys, not Gilmours, were from Co. Down'.2,4
He married Emma Elizabeth Stowell, daughter of David Stowell and Sarah Elizabeth Day, on 2 June 1903 at St Andrew, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand.5,6,7 James Renwick Harvey and Emma Elizabeth Stowell lived between 1911 and 1914 at Pareora, St Andrews, Temuka, Canterbury, New Zealand; where their occupation on the Electoral Roll was farmer and married.8 James Renwick Harvey and Emma Elizabeth Stowell lived in 1919 at Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand; where their occupation on the Electoral Roll continued as farmer and married.9 James Renwick Harvey died on 23 July 1927 at Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand; age 66.1,10 He was buried on 26 July 1927 at Timaru Cemetery, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand.1 His estate was probated in 1927; and he was described as of 'Timaru.11'
