James Francis Ford also went by the name of Frank Ford.3 He was born on 5 February 1895 at West Norwood, London, England; and his birth was recorded at Lambeth Registration district in the March quarter 1895.1,4 He was the son of Lewis John Ford and Ada Emma Philbrook.3,2 James Francis Ford was baptized on 6 June 1895 at St Luke, West Norwood, London, England.2,5 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 67 Exeter Road, Croydon, Surrey, England, as Frank Ford, Son, age 6, birthplace West Norwood.3

He emmigrated from England to Canada in 1906.6 He his name appears in the Alberta Homestead Records 1870-1930:

'FORD, James Francis (died 1916)
Section 10     Township 49     Range 5     Meridian 4
Film # 2883 in Accession # 1970.313 at Provincial Archives of Alberta
File # 1833780'.

The Alberta Genealogical Society website provides the following information:

'Under the Dominion Lands Act, once Crown land had been surveyed and officially declared available for settlement, individuals could apply to homestead a quarter section (160 acres) of their choice. Then, after paying a $10 filing fee and 'proving up' their homestead claim (occupying the land for at least three years and performing certain improvements, including building a house and barn, fencing, breaking and cropping a portion of the land), the homesteader could apply for patent (title) to the land.

'Dominion Lands Branch in Ottawa managed the homesteading process, although business was conducted at local land agency offices throughout the Province. When each quarter section was homesteaded for the first time it was given a file number and all documents relating to that quarter were placed on file until the land patent was granted.

'Control of natural resources was transferred to the provinces in 1930 and records of active transactions were turned over to the Province. Documents related to patented lands, abandoned claims and other dormant records were also transferred to the Province in 1956. These records were microfilmed and the originals destroyed. The resulting 686 microfilm reels were transferred to the PAA and are found in Accession 1970.313. It is this collection that has been indexed by Alberta Genealogical Society volunteers.

'Homestead files normally contain:

An application for homestead, containing the applicant's name, age, birthplace, last residence, prior occupation, number of adults and children in household.
An application for patent, containing name, age, occupation, post office, nationality, residency information, wife/children (no names), breaking/cropping, livestock, buildings, fencing.
A notice that patent (title) has been issued.7'

He appears on a list of Canadian Soldiers of the First World War. His Attestation Paper for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force gives his details as single, birthplace England, next of kin his father and he was a Homesteader on 28 January 1915.4 He appeared on the census of 1916 at 24 Battle River, Alberta, Canada, as Son, age 21, birthplace England, Military Service.6

He died on 25 October 1916 at France at age 21; when he was killed in action during the Great War and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission information reads: 'Ford, James Francis. Rank: Private. Service No: 436654. Date of Death: 25/10/1916. Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry. 46th Bn.' The Canada, War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty), 1914-1948 records that his unit was in the 'Tranches near Courcellette.8,9,10' He was commemorated where his name is listed at Vimy Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France.8,11,12
