Last Edited | 2 Sep 2021 |
Albert Phillips was born in 1841 at Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Birmingham Registration district in the December quarter 1841.3,4,5,6 He was the son of Phillip and Frances Phillips; in 1861 Phillip was a Metallic Bedstead Maker and two of his sons, John and Albert 'inherited the bedstead business'.7,5
He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 53 Pershore Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Son, age 19, birthplace Birmingham, Warwickshire, and he was a Match? Maker.7
He married Rachel Mosely, daughter of Lewin Mosely and Lydia Alex, in 1869 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at London City Registration district in the June quarter 1869.8,9 Albert Phillips according to 'Birmingham Jewry 1749-1914' with his brother John developed the bedstead business 'sufficiently to become known eventually as "doyens of the metallic bedstead trades", earning the title of Midland Captains of Industry'. Albert was 'born in the same week in 1841 as the Prince of Wales, resembled his namesake as an attractive cosmopolitan, with a tremendous zest for life. He ran his export business from the Excelsior Works in Floodgate Street. Albert also resembled his Uncle, Jacob Phillips, in his taste for adventure, setting out enthusiastically each year on long business trips to "strange locations and old-world places". In 1906, he got more than he bargained for, becoming involved at uncomfortably close quarters in a bloody uprising in Constantinople. In spite of this, he managed to sell some of his bedsteads to the Sultan of Turkey. He, too [like his brother John], exhibited in Australia, and also at the Paris International Exhibition in 1879, where he showed the newly popular tricycle. His coming and going left little time for civic and communal affairs. But he took full part in organisations to guard the interests of his trade, holding strong political views "which may be said to begin and end with Tariff Reform". During the 80's he worked hard for improvement in the railway rates, which bore so hardly on the Midlands, becoming a founder member of the Birmingham and District Railway Rates Association. He also fought, through unsuccessfully, for the improvement of the Waterways, convinced of the benefit they could still bring to inland commerce. In 1903, he became Greek Consul, the King of the Hellenes conferring on him the Order of Chevalier of the Royal Greek Order. Greek art and archaeology fascinated him and he acquired a fine collection of coins. He also obtained and presented to the City Museum and Art Gallery, a case of Egyptian mummies. The remainder of his life he commuted enviably between his house in Charlotte Road, Edgbaston, with all its treasures, and the then deep countryside under Bredon Hill, where he had a summer residence at Birlingham.10'
He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 10 Charlotte Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Head, married, age 28, birthplace Birmingham, Warwickshire, and he was a Metallic Bedstead Manufacturer. He was living with his Wife Rachel and Daughter Amelia. Also living in the household was a General Servant.11 He was executor on 23 October 1875 of his father-in-law Lewin Mosely's will which was granted to 'Albert Phillips of Rea-street South Birmingham in the County of Warwick Bedstead Manufacturer a Creditor' and married to his Daughter Rachel.12
He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 10 Charlotte Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Head, married, age 39, birthplace, Birmingham, and he was a 'Manufacturer'. The full entry reads:

Albert Dresden Vandam1
M, #6674, b. March 1843, d. 26 October 1903
Last Edited | 2 Sep 2021 |
Albert Dresden Vandam was born in March 1843 at Amsterdam, Netherlands.1,2 He is the subject of a full biography in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as a 'journalist and writer':
He 'was the son of Mark Vandam, of Jewish descent, district commissioner for the Netherlands state lottery. Before he was thirteen he was sent to Paris, where he was privately educated and remained fifteen years. According to his own story, he was looked after in boyhood by two maternal great-uncles, who had been surgeons in Napoleon's army, had set up after Waterloo in private practice at Paris, enjoyed the entrée to Napoleon III's court, and entertained at their house the leaders of Parisian artistic society. Vandam claimed that his youth was passed among French people of importance, and that he also made the acquaintance of the theatrical and Bohemian worlds of the French capital.
'Vandam began his career as a journalist during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, writing for English papers, and he was correspondent for American papers during the Franco-Prussian War. After settling in London in 1871 he did translation from French and Dutch, and other literary work, occasionally going abroad on special assignments for newspapers. From 1882 to 1887 he was again in Paris as correspondent for The Globe, subsequently making his home anew in London.
'Vandam's An Englishman in Paris, published anonymously in 1892 (2 vols.), excited considerable curiosity. It collected apparently intimate gossip of the courts of Louis Philippe and Napoleon III. Vandam wrote again on French life and history, often depreciatingly, in My Paris Note-Book (1894), French Men and French Manners (1895), Undercurrents of the Second Empire (1897), and Men and Manners of the Second Empire (1904), but he did not repeat the success of his first effort. He also published some novels.
'Vandam translated into English the autobiography of the sixteenth-century Pomeranian notary Bartholomew Sastrow, which he published as Social Germany in Luther's Time (1902, introduction by H. A. L. Fisher)...1'
He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 20 Scarborough Street East, Whitechapel, London, England, as Lodger, unmarried, age 28, birthplace Amersterdam, Holland, and he was a Commercial Traveller.3
He married Maria Mosely, daughter of Lewin Mosely and Lydia Alex, in 1876 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Pancras Registration district in the June quarter 1876 and indexed as Maria Mosely and Albert Dresden Vandam.4,1
Albert Dresden Vandam was reported in The London Gazette under The Bankruptcy Act, 1869, in the London Bankruptcy Court, as Author, formerly of 43 Elgin-road, Notting Hill, and now of 23 Elgin-crescent, Notting Hill, Middlesex in November 1878.5 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 55 Elgin Crescent, Kensington, London, England, as Head, married, age 38, birthplace Amsterdam, Holland, and he was an Author and Journalist; his total household comprised his Wife, six Boarders and two Domestic Servants.2 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 47a Manchester Street, St Marylebone, London, England, as Head, married, age 58, birthplace London, and he was a Journalist (Author); his wife, boader Edmund R Parry, a cook and a housemaid completed his household.6 He died on 26 October 1903 at 47a Manchester Street, Marylebone, London, England, at age 60; and his death 'at his home' was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the December quarter 1903.1,7,8 He was the subject of an obituary in The Times, London, and The New York Times on 27 October 1903.9,10 His estate was probated on 22 December 1903; and the National Probate Register for 1903 records: 'Vandam Albert Dresden of 47a Manchester-street Middlesex...Administration London to Maria Parry (wife of Reece Edmund Parry).11'
