Arthur Percy Stowell was also known as Alfred Percy Stowell.3 Arthur Percy Stowell was also known as Percy Stowell.1 He was born on 27 August 1895 at Springbrook, South Canterbury, New Zealand; and transcribed as Alfred Percy Stowell.1,3,4 He was the son of Henry Stowell and Louisa Collins.1 Arthur Percy Stowell was 'a tally clerk at Pareora Freezing Works when he enlisted on 26 August 1915. He gave his last employer as W. Watkins, foreman butcher of Pareora Freezing Works and his next of kin as his mother Louise Stowell of Pareora near Timaru. He was born at Springbrook on 27 August 1894, so was just one day short of his 21st birthday, and had served in the territorials. He was 5ft 9in tall, weighed 147lbs, had fair hair, brown eyes and brown hair. He passed all physical tests. He embarked with the 8th Reinforcements of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion on 13 November 1915, sailing from Wellington to Suez.

'Private Stowell’s army record states that he took part in the Egyptian campaign of 1915-16 and was then on the Western Front 1916-17. He was hospitalised with German measles in France in April 1917. He spent eight days in hospital before being transferred back to base depot. Two months later he died of wounds received in action on 6 June 1917 – that he was brought in dead to an Advanced Dressing Station of the 3rd NZ Field Ambulance in the field in Belgium.5'

He died on 6 June 1917 when he was killed in the Great War [World War I] 'after nearly two years in the fighting line'. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information:

'Name: STOWELL, ARTHUR PERCY.Initials: A P. Nationality: New Zealand. Rank: Private..Regiment/Service: Canterbury Regiment, N.Z.E.F. Unit Text: 1st Bn. Age: 22. Date of Death: 06/06/1917. Service No: 6/3483. Additional information: Son of Henry and Louisa Stowell, of Pareora, New Zealand. Also served in Egypt. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: A. 12. Cemetery: Underhill Farm Cemetery, Belgium'. According to the Auckland War Memorial Cenotaph he was single and had embarked at Wellington, New Zealand, on 13 November 1915 for Suez, Egypt.

The Commonwealt War Graves Commission also give the following historical information on the Belgian Cemetery: ' 'Underhill Farm' and 'Red Lodge' were the names given to two buildings on the north-western edge of Ploegsteert Wood. They were occupied by dressing stations and the cemetery which they used, is close to the farm. The cemetery was begun in June 1917 and used until January 1918. It fell into German hands in the spring of 1918, when it was used under the name of "The Military Cemetery at the foot of the Nightingale Hill". The cemetery was recovered in September 1918 and used again for Commonwealth burials until October. There are 190 Commonwealth casualties of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. Nine of the burials are unidentified and special memorials commemorate five casualties whose exact places of burial in the cemetery could not be determined. The cemetery was designed by G H Goldsmith.6,1,7,8,9,10,11'

He was the subject of an obituary in The Timaru Herald of 25 June 1917: 'Quite a gloom was cast over Pareora when the news came through that Private A P Stowell had died of wounds received in action. Private Stowell who was the youngest son of Mrs H Stowell, Pareora, was a most popular boy and highly esteemed by all who knew him. His mother has received messages of sympathy from all parts of the Dominion. Private Stowell left with the 8th Reinforcements, went through the Somme push last year, and it is surmised that he fell in the last great fight when the New Zealanders made such a glorious name for themselves and so many brave men made the supreme sacrifice. Private Stowell was 22 years of age'.12,13,14

He was commemorated in New Zealand and there is a photograph of his mother's memorial in the General Section on the Timaru District Council website in the form of an open book also commemorating her son Arthur Percy Stowell who 'died of wounds at Messins'. (He is also listed in The History of the Canterbury Regiment N.Z.E.F. 1914-1919 by Captain David Ferguson published in 1921) at Timaru Cemetery, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand.15,16,17,18,19
