There were reports in several newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph and Courier, London. as follows:

Birmingham Daily Post (Birmingham, England), and Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin, Ireland) on 26 July 1900. 'Fatal Boiler Explosion—An explosion resulting in loss of life and injury to person occurred yesterday afternoon on the premises of the Crystal Palace District Electrice Supply Company, Sydenham. Without a moment's notice the great boiler burst with a terrifying report, and wrecked two large buildings. Five men were working in the building at the time, and of these one, a young fellow named William James Philbrook, was instantly killed, his body being frightfully mutilated. The other men were injured, two of them very seriously. The explosion was followed by a fire which, however, was soon extinguished.'

Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser (Exeter, England) on 28 July 1900 'On Wednesday an explosion occurred on the premises of the Crystal Palace District Electric Supply Company, doing tremendous damage. A workman named William James Philbrook, aged 19, was killed instantly. Two others were terribly injured, and two in a lesser degree'.4,5,6,7,3,8

He was buried on 30 July 1900 at Ladywell Cemetery, Lewisham, London, England.3

     Walter James Philbrook was born on 13 December 1884 at Sydenham, Kent, England; and his birth was recorded at Lewisham Registration district in the March quarter 1885.1,2,3 He was the son of William Philbrook and Eliza Alice Hunter.1 Walter James Philbrook appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 24 Springfield Road, Sydenham, Kent, England, as Son, age 6, birthplace Sydenham, Kent.1 He married Ellen Trebley in 1915 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Lewisham Registration district in the December quarter 1915 and indexed as Walter J Philbrook and Ellen Trebley.4 Walter James Philbrook and Ellen Trebley lived between 1918 and 1939 at 21 Springfield Road, Lewisham, London, England; and they appeared on the Electoral Register with Alice Philbrook (1918-1920) and Walter William Philbrook (1938-1939).5 Walter James Philbrook died on 18 May 1945 at London, England, at age 60; and his death was recorded at Camberwell Registration district in the June quarter 1945.6,7 His estate was probated; and The 1945 National Probate Calendar records he was 'of 21 Springfield-rise Wells Park-road Sydenham London died 18 May 1945 on the way to Dulwich Hospital London Administration Llandudno 5 June to Ellen Philbrook widow.7'

     William Carpenter was born in 1866 at Twickenham, Middlesex, England; and his birth was recorded at Brentford Registration district in the June quarter 1866.1,2 He was the son of William and Fanny Carpenter (née Pines); in 1901 William was a Farm Labourer at England.3,4 He married Alice Ellen Philbrook, daughter of William Philbrook and Eliza Alice Hunter, in 1899 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Lewisham Registration district in the December quarter 1899.1,5 William Carpenter appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 13 Springfield Road, Sydenham, London, England, as Head, married, age 31, birthplace Twickenham, Middlesex and he worked as a Domestic Groom Gardener.
