1850: Union Tp., Davis Co., IA, p. 244; 1860: Prairie Tp., household I. Jolly. Deeds and probate records need to be studied to determine his death date and the names of his heirs. He made several purchases relating to the estate of William Walker in the 1850's, but it is not clear that he had any direct interest in that estate. He was probably just buying land adjoining his farm.
[5305] Based on assumption that years in the age at death were misread.
[5306] Age at death transcribed as 53 years, 2 months, 2 days. The years are clearly wrong, based on censuses and records for the rest of the family. The correct years should be 59 or possible 58.

Birthdate from the bounty land warrant application file of the estate of John B. Smith, which includes copy of information from the "family record" of John B. Smith.
Signing his full name on the inscription, he presented a copy of the book "Fifteen Years among the Mormons" to the John Wingate McCoy family. His birthplace is given in the 1850 and 1860 censuses as Indiana. So far, not conclusively identified on any census after 1860. (1860, Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA, with George W. Snodgrass, physician, and family.)
However, there are several records that seem to relate to him. Another, unrelated Hugh Smith from Kentucky lived in Van Buren Co., IA, but so far, no record of his middle intial has been found. His wife was Martha Redman (09 oct 1827 - 01 oct 1903, buried in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp.), and he lived in Van Buren Co. until his death in 1907 (also in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp., Van Buren Co., IA, 20 dec 1820 - 30 sep 1907). A marriage record in Van Buren Co. has Hugh D. Smith marrying Armilda Hale 01 mar 1864. In 1870, Armilda and her daughter Fanny Smith are living with a different family (Armilda is working as a servant), and Hugh is not in the county. By 1880, she was married to Ira W. Abernathy, according to records of the Hale family, and the 1880 census shows her with her daughter Fanny (now listed as Abernathy) and two more children by her second husband.. There is a cemetery record in Cantril for Nancy Ellen, wife of Hugh D. Smith, died 07 may 1880, age 39 (she should be listed on the 1880 US Census mortality schedules). She would have to be a second wife, and since the first wife was still alive and had remarried, Armilda and Hugh must have been divorced, or else there were two Hugh D. Smith's, not likely even in the Smith family! Finally, the 1880 census shows H. D. Smith, single, age 42, born in Ohio and parents born in Ohio, living with the R. D. Smith family and various other boarders in Jackson Tp., Van Buren Co., IA. He appears to be unrelated to the head of the household, and thus could actually be our Hugh D. Smith. It may be possible to fill in some of the blanks here by studying court records, state censuses, etc.
Records of the Van Buren Co. "Old Settlers' Association", from lists of participants in reunions in 1871, indicate that H. D. Smith of Jackson Tp. arrived in the county in October, 1839. Since he was only an infant then, we can place the migration of the John B. Smith family in the same year.
Since the second Hugh Smith, the one who married Martha Redman, died in 1907, it is virtually certain that our Hugh D. Smith is the one who killed himself in 1890: The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa), 02 oct 1890, "TIRED OF LIFE. Hugh D. Smith, of Cantrill, Commits Suicide. Keokuk, Ia., Sept. 29.—The town of Cantrill, Ia., was thrown into an intense state of excitement yesterday over the suicide of Mr. Hugh D. Smith, an old resident of that place. He shot himself with an old army pistol, and he dies almost instantly. Family trouble was the cause. He was respected by the entire community, and had the sympathy of everybody in the family disturbances." A story appeared 28 sep 1890 in the Omaha Daily Bee (Omaha, Nebraska), indicating the death occurred on the morning of September 27.

Apparently not the Huldah A. Smith who married Job S. Edgington, son Joseph born 25 sep 1856, Meigs Tp. 1860 census showed that Huldah b. 1816. There is a possibility she was the daughter of Joseph's brother John, however. Joel can be ruled out, as his will in known and would certainly have mentioned Huldah or her children if they were his descendants. See Adams Co. 1860 census, p. 215.
