Bible records indicate middle initial is H, but Zumwalt family record has middle name as Kindle, also used as the middle name of son Daniel. This is accepted tentatively, though it is possible someone misread H for K, and leapt to the conclusion that it stood for Kindle. Zumwalt family information from Sheila Williamson, Tacoma, WA, from various published sources. The primary sources have not been located yet.
The detailed account by her eldest daughter Nancy does not give her a middle name at all. The name Kindle or Kendall appears somewhat later in collateral lines, but there is no other suggestion of Kindle or Kendall ancestry in the Smith family.
[6009] According to funeral notice in Sacramento Bee, 21nov1896. This source lists her middle initial as "K", notes age as 85 years, 5 months, 3 days.
[14794] marriage book 3, p. 234, and marriage license book 3, dated 16jun1830. The latter source indicated name is Jacob Zumwalt, Jr. Permission dated 16jun1830 by Reuben Smith for his dau. Susannah to marry Jacob Zumwalt.

In 1920 census, the family is in Fresno; Walter is listed as high school principal. By 1930, his widow Georgia is living with her daughter and son-in-law in San Francisco. A short article in the San Francisco Chronicle, December 19, 1908, includes his picture and says that he had served as head of the science department at Mission High School for the past 8 years, and had recently been appointed principal. By 1917, he had been principal at Petaluma for the past 6 years and was resigning, likely headed for Fresno.
[5343] From Reuben P. Smith affidavit of Nov. 3, 1898 in regard to his pension.
[5344] San Francisco Examiner 14 mar 1921 notes his death by accidental gunshot.
