In 1850, he is living next door to his mother Elizabeth Smith. At that time, he appears to have married a widow Susanna Childs (Chiles) with 5 children by her previous marriage, and one son by Andrew. 1850: Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA; 1860: Warren Co., IA. At least one of the Childs' sons remained in the county at least until 1870. Andrew and Susanna are located at Richland Tp., Warren Co., IA in 1870, occupation sawyer, no others in the household. She appears on the 1850 mortality schedule for Davis Co., IA, next to John B. Smith, and so apparently belongs in this family. Birthplace is given as "Ia.", which in the Davis Co. population schedules for 1850, turns out to mean Indiana, not Iowa ("Iowa" seems always to be written out in full in this document).
