We identify him as the son of "M. S." Victor because he was living in Pyritz at the same address as the widow Victor born Philippi in the list of 1865, no. 58 Strattmerstrasse. By that time, Louis had married (the name of his wife not clearly legible on the list of 1865) and had five children, with birthdates apparently ranging from about 1853 to 1865. On the 1853 list, he was still single, a merchant, with an apprentice Leopoldt Freidenberg, age 15.
There are scattered mentions of a Louis Victor in late 19th Century newspapers and other records of Cincinnati, Ohio. We wondered if perhaps the Louis Victor found in the records of Pyritz might have ended up in Cincinnati. So far, there is very little information about the man in Cincinnati. The best citation to date is an editorial in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Sunday, 05 nov 1893, concerning Democratic candidates for the Ohio State Legislature. Among them was a Louis Victor, a shoe-cutter and foreman at the Sachs & Gerstler Shoe Company, who had retired from this job upon his nomination. Also in the same newspaper, 26 jan 1902, we note a Louis Victor among the baseball players of the Shoe and Leather League, representing Krohn, Fechheimer, & Co. The Krohn in question was Irwin MIchael Krohn (1869-1948), son of Moses Krohn (born about 1838 in Pyritz, lived in Saugerties, NY before moving to Cincinnati, where he died in 1905), in turn a son of Itzig Krohn and Ernestine Dobrin, of Pyritz, Prussia. In other words, it is now clear that the Krohn family in Cincinnati would have known the Victor family from Pyritz. Our Solomon Victor claimed to have been living in Cincinnati in 1870, but it is not yet clear how early Louis Victor settled there. An obituary for Irwin Michael Krohn, also in the Cincinnati Enquirer, 12 dec 1948, says that Moses had been the mayor of Saugerties, NY, and that the family moved to Cincinnati when Irwin Michael was about 5 years old, thus about 1874. A directory for Cincinnati from 1871 shows Louis Victor as a partner in the firm of Victor and Liebman (the other partner was Jacob L. Liebman), furnishing goods, 37 West Pearl Street, residence 67 Hopkins. Nearby was (J.) Victor, (M. B. and L. ) Bettmann, & Co., at 12 West Pearl Street. The firm of Victor and Liebman may be significant, for there is a marriage license in Auglaize Co., Ohio in 1900 for Louis Lewin of Chicago and Helena B. Victor of Cincinnati. Helena, according to the marriage license, was born in Cincinnati 22 feb 1874, the daughter of Louis Victor and Bertha "Lieberan" or "Liebenan". We think this is more likely an error for Liebman. However, on the 1880 census of Cincinnati, we found "Birdie" Victor with several children, including Helena (correct age), but Louis Victor was not present, and the notations indicate that both parents had been born in Hesse. So, this family is likely not ours, and Louis is likely the one who was born about 1836 in Hesse-Darmstadt (the name of the city in the Hamburg passenger lists looks like Alzly, not very clear, probably should be Alzey, near Worms), arrived in New York on the Germania 07 sep 1863, along with Bertha Liebmann (at that time, unmarried, but apparently traveling alone or with Louis, they are listed together on both the arrival and the departure passenger lists). Jacob Liebmann (from Alzey, internet sources gives dates 1842-1900) was already in Cincinnati as early as 1864 (directory entry); Bertha was presumably a sister or cousin of Jacob. Thus, in spite of the coincidence of names, there is so far no evidence to support the idea that the Louis Victor family in Cincinnati was related to our Solomon, and we have found no evidence that he knew anyone else who had settled in Cincinnati before 1870. What became of the Louis Victor of Pyritz remains a mystery.

Marriage record at Griefenberg is found on FHL microfilm #1190946, on pp. 21-22. The manuscript is believed lost, along with essentially everything relating to the Jewish communities of "Prussia" that was collected by the Third Reich for microfilming. The microfilm in this case suffers from very uneven illumination, resulting in nearly complete illegibility of the left sides of the "recto" pages and right sides of the "verso" pages. However, the entry clearly names the couple as Michaelis Victor and Beile Leise Philippi (many examples where Bertha is used as a secular name for the Hebrew name Beile can be found on the internet). Their ages are obscured, but probably began with the numeral 2, and possibly both were age 27. The name of Michael's father appears fo be Solomon Victor, as expected, and he came from Pyritz. The name of Bertha's father is too indistinct to read. There is additional script, probably undecipherable, after the name of Michael's father, presumably the name of his mother, although this information was not usually recorded for the other marriages on this list. The witness on behalf of Michael was the Schulmeister Hirsch.
Michael was mentioned in testimony at the trial of our Solomon Victor in 1870, in Bloomington, Illinois, as an uncle of our Solomon, having at some point in the past, perhaps about 1850, attempted to hang himself, and then possily declared insane and institutionalized. However, the testimony from Jacob Krohn of Freeport, Illinois, who had grown up with our Solomon Victor in Pyritz, Prussia, was technically hearsay evidence, reported only as a brief summary in the Bloomington Pantagraph. It is possible that Krohn was mistaken in some of his testimony, or that the details were incorrectly reported in the newspaper. Krohn had immigrated to the United States in 1853 (he is not listed on the Matrikel of 1853), and had returned to Pyritz for a visit in 1866, so he might be considered a well-informed source. However, he had apparently grown up with two boys named Solomon Victor, both the same age, first cousins, so it is conceivable that he was confused about which was which, and their respective parentages. Because the court had already recognized that this was hearsay evidence, the cross-examination (at least as reported in the newspaper account) did not delve into the genealogical details, but established only that Jacob Krohn had neither witnessed nor had any personal knowledge of the attempted hanging of Michael Victor, nor of any of the subsequent events. Nevertheless, the testimony seems sufficient proof that our Solomon grew up in Pyritz, and that he was a nephew of Michael Victor.

Family oral history (sometimes calling him Moses Isaac Victor, but the information we obtained from the widow and three daughters of Walter Victor in the 1960's did not include a middle name) says he was a leather merchant in Berlin. No trace of him has been found in the records of the Jewish community in Berlin, but it is possible that he lived in one of the out-lying districts or suburbs.
A Moses Victor, tailor, arrived in Hull, England from Hamburg on the ship Queen of Scotland 11 may 1846 (alien registration cards on Ancestry.com). A directory of Manchester, England, supposed to be from 1861, but lacking the title page, has an entry for "Moses Victor and Sons", suggesting that the family may have opened, or attempted to open, a branch office there. However, no other trace of this elusive business has been found.
In the few surviving records of what was then Pyritz, Prussia, now Pyrzyce, Poland, there is a man called "M. S. Victor" with a wife Bertha Philippi and apparently a son Louis. We suspected this was our Moses, and that this couple also had a son Solomon. The naming pattern in Pyritz and other Jewish communities in the area at that period was that the second name was that of the father. A Solomon, son of Wigdor, a citizen of Pyritz, had taken the surname Victor in 1812, when the government required all Jewish citizens to choose a permanent family name. "M. S." and "Victor S." Victor, who appear in records from Pyritz from about 1840 until about 1865, are of the right age to be sons of this Solomon. The surname adoptions lists for this region all seem to have survived, and this is the only Victor family in the area.
Testimony from the trial of our Solomon Victor in 1870, in Bloomington, Illinois, establishes that our Solomon had an uncle Michael, who may have been declared insane and institutionalized. The same testimony stated that Solomon's mother was a Meyer, which in turn would imply that our Solomon should have been a son of Victor Solomon Victor, whose wife was Liena Meyer (Victor S. Victor also had a son Solomon, according to a list of the Jewish community in Pyritz compiled in 1853, and a Solomon Victor of his generation was still in Pyritz in 1865). However, the testimony was technically hearsay evidence, and the parentage and relationships of the people from Pyritz who were mentioned were not clearly stated. One solution that seemed plausible was that "M. S." Victor was Moses, who was the father of our Solomon. This possibility had to be discarded once the marriage of Michaelis Victor and Beile Leise Philippi, on 21 may 1823, was located at Griefenberg, Poland.
But if "M. S. Victor" is Michael, uncle of our Solomon, then we can either give more weight to the family story, and show Moses as a brother of Victor and Michael, with the proviso that Moses must also have married a Meyer, perhaps the sister of Victor's wife Liena Meyer, or else show "Moses" as a nickname for "Victor" (or vice versa), since in that case no significant difficulties remain, the name called Victor in the Jewish census of Pyritz in 1853 would be the same man called Moses in our family story. For the moment, and in the absence of other evidence, we show Moses as a brother of Victor and Michael.
