Jeremiah Bell Jeter

JETER, Jeremiah Bell, clergyman, born in Bedford county. Va., 18 July, 1802; died in Richmond, Virginia, 25 February, 1880. He began to preach in 1822, and for four years travelled through Virginia as a missionary exhorter. He was ordained as a Baptist minister on 4 May, 1824, and became pastor of two churches in Campbell county in 1826. He held various pastorates till 1835, when he took charge of the 1st Baptist church in Richmond, Virginia, with which he remained connected for nearly fourteen years.

In 1849 he accepted a pastorate in St. Louis, but in 1852 returned to Richmond, and became pastor of the Grace street church. After the division of the denomination, he presided over the southern Baptist conventions for several years. He was for some time president of Richmond college, and held the offices of president of the Southern foreign missionary board, and president of the trustees of the Baptist theological seminary at Louisville, Ky. At the instance of the board of missions he visited Italy to supervise the missionary work in that country, and to provide a chapel in Rome. About the close of the civil war he became editor of the "Religious Herald," published in Richmond. He was distinguished as a preacher and controversialist, and successful as an author.

Among his published works are a "Life of Mrs. Henrietta Shuck, the first American Female Missionary to China; "Memoir of the Reverend Andrew Broaddus" (1850); "Campbellism Examined" (New York, 1854); "Campbellism Re-Examined"; "The Christian Mirror, or a Delineation of Seventeen Classes of Christians" (Charleston, 1856); "The Seal of Heaven" (New York. 1871); "The Life of the Reverend Daniel Witt"; and "Recollections of a Long Life." With the Reverend Richard Fuller he compiled "The Psalmist," a book of hymns that came into general use in the Baptist congregations of the United States, and was introduced in British North America and in England.

Notes

"General Lenoir was born on May 8, 1751 in Brunswick Co., VA and was the youngest son of Thomas and Mourning Lenoir. At age 8, the he moved with his family to Surry County, NC.

General Lenoir had an extensive military and political career. Prior to the Rev. War, he went out on numerous expeditions against the Indians. During the Rev. War, he first served as 1st Lieutenant under Colonel Cleveland and then voluteered as a private during a forced march to overtake Ferguson at King's Mountain.

After the war in 1795, he became a General in NC Militia. As a reward for his military service, NC awarded him 5000 acres located along the bank of the Tennessee River. Unfortunately, he could not occupy his lands, because others claimed ownership of the land. Finally in 1809, after a lengthy court battle, all claims were resolved, and the courts determined that Gen. Lenoir was legally entitled to the land . In Sept., 1809, he deeded this land to his eldest son Maj. William Ballard Lenoir.

After finishing his military career, Gen. Lenoir embarked on his political career. He served two years as a Clerk of Wilkes Co., NC. He was appointed Justice of the Peace and later served in both branches of the legislature. During his last term in the Senate, he served as President of the Senate. Later, he became the first President of the Trustees of the University of North Carolina.

On May 1, 1833, he applied for a military pension for his Rev. War Services (Pension S7137). His pension was $266 / year.

Fort Defiance isn't a fort at all, but a house named for a fort. It was the home of Revolutionary War General William Lenoir, for whom the nearby town of Lenoir is named. The house was built in the late 1780's, about the time my own ancestors settled in the Buffalo Cove area of the Yadkin River Valley. The smaller annex to the house was built during the Civil War era. The annex is on the left in the picture above.

Fort Defiance is a popular setting for reenactments, and both Revolutionary and Civil War encampments may be seen there at different times.

Volunteers provide tours of the house for a small fee on certain weekends.

Fort Defiance ~Caldwell County
Fort Defiance is located on the Yadkin River between Lenoir and Blowing Rock, NC. It is the historic 18th century homestead of General William Lenoir, Revolutionary War Hero. The influence of Fort Defiance was statewide: General Lenoir was a member of the Council of State, served in both houses of the Legislature, was of the Convention of 1788 which initially rejected the Constitution of the United States. He was President of the first Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina and a Justice of the Peace for over 60 years. A surveyor by profession, William Lenoir served in the militia, fighting against the Indians and later the British. His account of the strategic battle of Kings Mountain has been reprinted often. This homestead's furnishings include over 250 original pieces, from teacups to bedsteads. The property contains over 5 acres with fine tress, English boxwoods and the family cemetery. A vast treasury of the General's original papers and correspondence, now in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of NC, gave authenticity and detail for the restoration. It offers costumed tour guides, covered picnic shelter, and restrooms. It is open 2:00-5:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sundays--April thru October; Special Tours by appointment. Call or write: Fort Defiance, Inc.; PO Box 686, Lenoir, NC 28645; for telephone information, call Caldwell County Chamber or Commerce (704) 754-0782 from 9am-5pm.
