Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1: JOSEPH LANCASTER BRENT, b. at “Pamunkey,” Charles County, Md., 30th November, 1826; d. at Baltimore, Md., 27th November, 1905; studied at Georgetown College, and LL.B. of same; at the breaking out of the Civil War he went South and offered his services to the Confederacy, and was Major on the staff of General Magruder, C. S. A.; Colonel of Artillery, C. S. A., 17th April, 1864, and promoted Brigadier General October, 1864; February 25th, 1863, Major Brent sank the U. S. ironclad gunboat Indianola, on the Mississippi, while in command of the Queen of the West and the Webb, two ordinary river boats; Lieutenant General Taylor, C. S. A., paid the following tribute to General Brent; “The esprit du corps of Major Brent's artillery was admirable, and his conduct and efficiency in action unsurpassed;” and in his history of those stirring times General Taylor speaks of the Indianola fight as “an action that for daring will bear comparison of any recorded of Nelson or Dundonald.” He was one of the Governors of the University Club of Baltimore; Deputy Govemor General from Maryland of the Society of Colonial Wars, and ex-President Maryland Society Sons American Revolution.


He m. 1869 Frances Rosella KENNER, dau. of Duncan Farrar KENNER, and Anne Guilhelmine Nanine BRINGIER, his wife, both of Ascension Parish and New Orleans, Louisiana, by whom he had:


I. DUNCAN KENNER, the subject of this memoir.
II. Nanine.
Arms–Gules, a wyvern or.
Crest–A Wivern's head between two wings expanded or.
Motto–Silentio et diligentia.


Residence–Baltimore, Md.
