Mr. Settle was the last remaining member of Mosby's Partizan
Rangers in Culpeper County, which once held so many of them, and
is, so far as known, one of the very last of the entire
organization, which under the leadership of that daring
chieftain, Col. John S. Mosby, established what was known as
"Mosby's Confederacy" in the counties of Fauquier, Prince
William and Culpeper and from this base made such successful
raids upon superior enemy forces that the daring and success of
Mosby's Men became almost a proverb.

Last member of the Mosby Rangers to pass away (age 94 yr's).
Military: Pvt., Co. B (post war roster). 43rd Battalion, VA
Cavalry, Mosby's Command (VRef973.745 K 1993, by Hugh C.
Keen/Horace Mewborn); Occupation: farmer near Griffinsburg,
Culp. Co., VA.
Death note: died Saturday morning after a long period of
declining health.
Burial note: Funeral services were conducted from his home by
his pastor, Rev. G. W. Cox of Gourdvine Baptist Church with
interment in the family section of Fairview Cemetery. Military
honors were given by the Culpeper Post No. 44, American Legion
with Commander John L. Jeffries of the Post, in charge of the
firing squad. Among the floral pieces on the grave was a silk
Confederate flag, sent by the Culpeper Chapter, United Daughters
of the Confederacy as a tribute to this soldier who "wore the
gray"
The active pallbearers were six members of the Culpeper Post,
John E. Duncan, Allan Rosenthal, G. E. Johnson, Eddie Gore,
Charles Cloud and Weakley.
The grandchildren carried the beautiful floral tributes were:
Roberta Settle, Helen Settle, Margie Compton, Mildred Brooks,
Virginia Jenkins, Beatrice Coughlin, Carrie Mills, Clarence
Settle, Bryant Weaver, Vincent Settle, Alvin Settle and Annie
German. At the time of his death he had twenty eight
grandchildren survived.
