Mother: UNNAMED |
According to his family Bible, Thomas was born 22 Jul 1794.
Various of his descendants have given TN, VA and NC as his place
of birth. He married Member Johns ca. 1815. She was born 21 Mar
1796. The places of their marriage and her birth have not been
documented at this time.
Dr. Nettie Lee BENSON, Editor of "THE RIDDELL, REDDELL, RIDDLE,
RUDDLE TRAIL" states in Vol. II, No. 2, page 26 as follows:
"The editor and compiler of THE TRAIL believes the place of
birth to be Virginia, especially since the two sons who spent
the most time with their parents gave in the 1880 census
Virginia as the place of birth of both Thomas RIDDELL, born on
22 Jul 1794 and his wife, Member JOHNS, born on 21 Mar 1796.
One or the other of them was said to be of Cherokee Indian
descent, for all the sons and daughters claimed to be
one-quarter Cherokee Indian, and several descendants who later
migrated to Oklahoma are said to have tried to acquire land
there on the basis of that descent. Records for these claims
have not been found to date."
The first positive record of Thomas shows him living in Union
Co., IL, near the Ohio River, in 1818. He lived there until
some time in the early to mid 1820, when he moved to Giles Co.,
TN. At this same time, John D. REDDELL was also living in Union
Co., IL and he also moved to Giles Co., TN at about the same
time.
Lawrence Co., TN land records, Entry 114, show that Thomas had
acquired 60 acres of land, by virtue of the occupant law, on the
waters of Shoal Creek in 1837. Later records indicate that he
had established a mill on Big Shoal Creek by late 1829. Entry
274, Book B, shows Thomas being granted 40 acres of land, again
by virtue of the occupant law and it is on this land that he
apparently built his mill. William, his brother, and James M.,
his son , were the chain bearers on this survey completed by
John Stribling.
Entry 357, Book B, shows that Member RIDDELL was granted 100
acres of land, by virtue of the occupant law, on the waters of
Big Shoal Creek. Joseph, her son, and George Eaton, were chain
bearers and John Stribling was surveyor. This entry is dated 17
Feb 1841 and the description of the land shows it to be
different from the land granted to Thomas .
Although forty acres of the land, and the mill, was sold by the
heirs on 24 Oct 1854. It is believed that Thomas died in
Lawrence County in the late 1830's or early 1840's and that
Member and the younger children continued to live there for some
time before moving to Leake Co., MS where at least three of the
children were married. Some of the older children had already
moved to AR and/or TX and most of the others moved to one or
both of these states at some time.
Thomas and Member had fourteen children. It is interesting to
note that in most of the records found for these children they
are using the REDDELL spelling of the name. Three of them, Jane,
Member Mira and Elizabeth Charlotte, died young and no
information is available on them. Information on four of them,
Samuel Jefferson, John Holland, Cynthia Ann and Thomas J., is
more extensive and will be presented just before their group
sheets. Brief information on the others will be presented here.
James Madison married twice in Lawrence Co., TN and land records
for that county show he owned land in that county. He is shown
in the census for Falls Co., TX in 1860 with what is apparently
a third wife.
Joseph J. married twice in Lawrence County. They had four
children before his death in the Civil War.
Catherine Diberry married in Lawrence County and had 14
children. She lived in Leake Co., MS, where many of her children
were born, and in Eastland and Erath Counties in TX. She died in
Erath Co., TX.
Martha Leetla married in Lawrence Co., TN and soon moved to
Attala Co., MS. She had ten children, most of whom remained in
MS. At least one moved to TX and one to TN.
Isaac Anderson married once in TN. She and her first child died
in childbirth. He married again in Leake Co., MS and had 13
children by this wife. He served in Company F of 33rd
Mississippi Infantry CSA. He died in Leake Co., MS 21 Jun 1919.
Mary Gentha married Christopher C. ARNOLD on 8 Oct 1857 in
Newport, AR. She had apparently gone to AR to visit or live with
either her brother, John Holland, or her sister Cynthia Ann, who
both lived in AR for a time. She had six children and died in
Izard Co., AR in Feb 1908.
William Henry was born in Lawrence Co ., TN. He first married
Minerva A. YOUNG in Leake Co., MS. They had three children. He
served in the 4th Mississippi Infantry CSA from 1861-1865. He
married Melissa A. PRICE 28 Mar 1867 in Grayson Co., TX. They
had seven children. He was a farmer, carpenter and a Dallas Co.,
TX police officer. He was killed on 17 Jun 1892 while a member
of the Dallas Police Force. He always told his family he
descended from Lord RIDDELL of England, a claim which has not
been verified."
