From ancestors of Barbara Smith by Barbara Smith. "The first
mention of the Haynes name in America is that of John Haynes of
Essex county, England, who left his estate to his two sons
Robert and Hezikiah (children by his first wife Mary Thornton)
and emigrated in 1633 to New england. He was elected governor of
Massachusetts in 1635 and governor of Connecticut in 1639, which
office he continued to hold. He supposedly also had another son,
Roger and daughter Mary by first wife. Second wife's name was
Mabel Harlakenden, a descendent of Saxon kings and direct
descendent of William the conqueror. His children by his second
wife were Mable, Joseph, John and Ruth.
Another possible ancester is Samuel Haines of England who
settled in Ipswich, Mass in 1635. He returned to England in 1638
and married Eleanor Neate of Wiltshire and brought her back to
Dover. They lived in Portsmouth and their children were Samuel,
Mary and Matthias. Walter Haines, also of Wiltshire came from
the town Sutton Mandeville in that county with his wife
Elizabeth and their children Thomas, John, Josias, Mary and
Sufferance. There also was a Thomas of Sudbury (another close
town) who came over in 1640.
Another is James Haynes of Salem, Mass who was the father of
John, James (died as infant), Benjamin, Mary, James, Jonathan,
Sarah and Thomas.
A Charles Haynes of New London, Conn. prior to the year 1664 was
married to Mary and had children named James, Mary, Peter,
Charles, Jonathon, Mary and Hercules.
In 1682, Richard Haines left Northamptonshire, England to come
to Burlington, NJ but died en route leaving a widow Margaret and
six children, the oldest of which was already resident in
America. The children were John, Richard, William, Thomas, Mary
and Joseph.
Shortly before 1700 a family by the name of Haynes came from
Shropshire to South Carolina. This family dropped the "s" from
the last name and John Hayne is it's earliest known member. Many
of this family went to Virginia."
