Benjamin Winslow, of Essex, was a son of Thomas, of Essex, 1703;
his will proved there 1726; supposed to have been a descendant
of John Winslow, who, with Richard Auborne, was granted 2,000
acres of land in New Kent Co., VA, 13 Feb 1667. He was also
granted land, 6,000 acres, in New Kent, south side of Poison
Black Swamp, with twelve headrights, 7 Aug 1669. (See Col.
Grants, No. 6, pp. 213 and 245.) It is not known to be a fact,
but it is generally supposed that the Virginia branch of the
Winslows is of the same family as the Massachusetts branch. Five
sons of Edward Winslow, of Durtwich, Co., Winchester, England,
emigrated to America. One of them, EDWARD, came over on the
Mayflower and became third Governor of the Massachusetts Bay
Colony. John may have been one of the younger sons, or a
grandson of Edward Winslow.
