Letter from Barbara J. Milligan, Administrator Assistant, to Ms.
Susan Key, 2132 Belle Grove Drive, Huntsville, Al. 35802. Oct
29, 1986.
"MARTIN KEY, SR. lived in the 1770's near Point of Fork in
present Fluvanna County and was the county's first sheriff
(1777). Later he moved to property he owned on the Rivanna
River adjoining land owned by THOMAS JEFFERSON. He and his wife,
ANN, (NANCY "ANN" BIBB) had twelve children and he died in 1791.
His widow frequently sold corn, oats and fowls to JEFFERSON in
the period from 1792 - 1804. There are also other KEY's,
including WALTER and JAMES (probably MARTIN's sons) listed in
Jefferson's account books as having sold corn to him during this
time.
JOHN KEY, presumbably either MARTIN's brother or son, was
JEFFERSON's steward from the fall of 1782 to the fall of 1784.
As steward, KEY kept the plantation accounts, and supervised the
overseers at Monticello and Shadwell; in general, he managed
JEFFERSON's Albemarle estate during JEFFERSON's absences in
public service. We know he was paid a salary for the year
1783/1784. KEY and JEFFERSON exchanged several letters during
the time KEY served as steward. None survive, but JEFFERSON's
notes of their contents can be seen in THE PAPERS OF THOMAS
JEFFERSON, published by Princeton University Press."
"REF. HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA. BY REV. EDGAR WOODS.
Several of MARTIN KEY, SR. and NANCY BIBB KEY son's served in
the American Revolutionary War. (Thomas; Martin, Jr.; Tandy;
Henry; John; and William Bibb Key).
JOHN (4), TANDY (1) KEY, and JOSHUA were magistrates of the
county, and WALTER KEY was appointed to the office, but declined
to accept. JOHN (4) served as sheriff in 1795, and TANDY (1) in
1809.
MARTIN KEY, SR. lived until 1791 dying on his estate. Though
living through the Revolution he was probably too old for active
service. He accompanied his parents (John (2) Key and Martha
Tandy) to Virginia and as the eldest son succeeded to the estate
at the death of John (2) Key. Martin Key, Sr. made repeated
purchases for himself and finally owned an emmense property.
(Source Allen Papers, Lawson McGhee Library, Knoxville, Tn.).
THE WILL OF MARTIN KEY, SR. WAS MADE IN FREDERICKSVILLE PARISH,
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA. It lists land, money, and slaves to
be given to certain of his children. One son, Henry, was willed
340 acres provided he "entirely declines the vicious practices
of gaming and excessive drinking".
Martin was also concerned about the education of his youngest
son, Walter. Martin Jr. and John were lawyers. Many of Martin's
sons were instrumental in the layout and building of roads and
bridges in the area, as noted in HISTORIC ROADS OF VIRGINIA,
concerning the Three Notched Road."
