John KEY Jr. "the Immigrant"

26 Jun 1653 - ____

ID Number: I60133

  • RESIDENCE: England and Charles City and New Kent Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: 26 Jun 1653, Settrington, East Riding, Yorkshire, England
  • DEATH: New Kent Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2235] [S2373] [S2558]
Father: John KEY "the immigrant"

Family 1 : Mary PALMER
  1. +Martin KEY I

Notes

"John (1) KEY was born June 26, 1653 in England and died in America.
Source for the following: Allen Papers, McClung Collection, Lawson McGhee Library, Knoxville, TN. Copied by Kenneth N. Key in 1979.

John (1) KEY, grandson or possibly great-grandson of Thomas (MARTIN?) KEY, was born in England June 26, 1653. He probably married before he left England.

His son John (2) KEY, was the first white child born in the Penn Colony 1682.
In the Key family tradition, John (1) KEY is said to be a son of Thomas (MARTIN?) KEY, who married Lady Mary Grey, royal Princess of the Tudor line, Great-granddaughter of Henry VII. However though some historians give Lady Mary's husband's Christian name as MARTIN, the majority name him Thomas KEY, and such was his signature. Also the emigrant could not have been the son of Thomas KEY, who married Lady Mary Grey, as the interval between Thomas Key born about 1525, and the emigrant, John (1) KEY, born about 1650, is to great. He was possibly a grandson or more probably a great grandson.

William PENN (1644-1718), English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania. His life long aim was to secure toleration for the Society of Friends. Receiving as gift of land from Charles II in payment of a debt, he established a colony at Philiadelphia (1682). He formulated a progressive and idealistic constitution with legislation by an assembly elected by popular vote, and granted full religious toleration.
It is possible that this John (1) Key was married about 1673 to Mary Palmer, daughter of Martin Palmer. per Kenneth N. Key Jan. 25, 1996 JOHN2KEY.FTW"

Family 1 : Philip Rootes THOMPSON

Notes

"Chiefly correspondence of Henry Jackson and Martha Jacquelin (Rootes) Cobb Jackson, with some correspondence of other members of their families. Between 1784 and 1811 the collection contains mostly letters received by Martha Rootes from women in her family, including her aunt Lucy Thornton, who lived in Caroline County, Virginia, her cousin Martha M. J. Robinson of Winchester, Virginia, and her friends Mary Cooke and E. Marion. Of interest are references to courtship, friendship, religious devotion and missionary efforts,
plantation life, the treatment of slaves, and the difficulties women encountered in operating a plantation."
