"About 1829 they moved to Indian lands in Hinds Co. MS. By 1835
they had moved into Chicksaw Indian Territory and settled near
Coffeeville, MS now Yalobusha county. Among the earliest land
records of Yalobusha County (Coffeeville) is a grant to Lindsey
for the NE quarter of Sec 6, Township 11, Range 3 west, dated 12
Nov 1836. In 1838 he was granted the adjacent SE quarter of
that section. By 1848, their older children were grown and
married, the entire family moved to Rusk County, TX and settled
about 12 miles northeast of Henderson, TX. Their older children
settled in adjacent counties in East Texas and raised large
families.
While they were among the first Higginbothams to settle in
Texas, oddly enough, a few miles to the west in Anderson County,
another Lindsey Higginbotham had settled some seven years
before. Both were born in GA and were probably cousins, but we
have found no documentation to indicate they knew each other, or
were related. in 1855, Lindsey and Elinor sold their homestead
to three of their younger sons, who are said to have gone to
California in the 1849 gold rush and returned with considerable
wealth. This deed became the center of a court fight in 1922,
contested by heirs of the three sons, almost 70 years later.
Lindsey and Elinor left a family Bible which was passed down
through the family, and in 1983 was in the possession of Mr. and
Mrs. Homer Seaton Higginbotham of Abilene, TX."
