John JOHNS

ABT 1715 - by 1773

ID Number: I62497

Father: John? Son of Richard JOHNS
Mother: Judith JOHNS (WIDOW)

Family 1 : Judith TANNER
  1. +Judith JOHNS
  2. +Joel JOHNS Sr.

Notes

" Judith Tanner [3522.1.2.4] married John Johns. We cannot connect this John Johns to the descendants of Richard Johns [1744] of King William County.

Judith and John settled in Amelia County on 600 acres they bought from Judith’s brother, Joel Tanner in 1747/8 and 1770 . Judith had eleven children before the death of her husband. He was dead before 1773 when they inventoried and appraised his estate . John did not have a will and the county appointed his son John Johns administrator and he delivered estate accounts for 1773-4 . The court ordered an estate report 5 May 1775 . On 25 July 1782, they settled his estate in Amelia County . They did not name John’s widow so we cannot confirm she was “Judith.” They did identify William Booth and his wife, Elizabeth Johns, as beneficiaries.

In 1782 Amelia County listed Judith Johns head of a household of eight whites and five blacks. Three of the blacks were perhaps Lewis, Amy, and Caesar, who Judith received in the estate settlement."

JOHN JOHNS was not named in the Last Will and Testament of JUDITH JOHNS of Goochland Co., VA (her Will indicated other unnamed children), but he was probably her son.

Goochland Co. VA Records that mention John Johns: 1736- Peter Bocar of Goochland Co., VA against Thomas Bassett and James Robinson of Goochland Co., VA. Bassett and Robinson to be paid by Peter Bocar for three days attendance 90 lbs of tobacco. Witnesses: JOHN JOHNS, Robert Hughes, William Alford, William Wright, Sylveser Alford and John Twitty, all of Goochland Co.

1745- Thomas Joplin was appointed surveyor of the highway from Rockfish Creek to Hardwar Creek in the room of JOHN JOHNS.

Land Patents for John Johns: 12 Jan 1746- Goochland Co., VA, 300 acres on both side of the South Fork of Rockfish Creek. Patent No. 45; 20 Sept 1748- Brunswick Co., VA, 404 acres on the South Fork of Crooked Run. Patent No. 28.

Deeds in Amelia Co. VA that mention John Johns: 3 Apr. 1770- Joel Tanner of Nottoway Parish to JOHN JOHNS.... Witnesses: John Gooch, John Johns Jr. and Joel Johns (Deed Book 11, pg.115).

Settlement of the estate of John Johns of Amelia County, VA 1782: We the subscribers being appointed by the Court of Amelia County to receive of John Johns, Administrator fo the Estate of John Johns, dec'd, a final Settlement of the Said Estate have by virtue thereof laid of and allotted the widdow of the said dec'd her Dower in the same.
