Part of land Thomas held was a 100-acre portion of “Kingsland,”
which his great-great-grandfather got in 1636. In 1659
Christopher Branch I gave this 100 acres to his grandsons,
William Branch [6648.2.1] and John Branch [6648.2.2], and John
got all 100 acres after the death of his brother. John left the
land to his daughter Obedience [6648.2.2.2], who, with her
husband, Thomas Turpin, sold it to James Branch [6648.1.3] in
1716 who sold it to Henry Vanderhood in 1726 . In 1737 — 100
years after it came into the Branch family — Henry Branch
[1662.1] and Joseph Ward [884.4], trustees of the Vanderhood
estate, deeded this tract to Thomas.
Thomas bought also 500 acres from Richard Dennis [3540.1.6.1/S]
in 1732 and a tract of 101 acres from the trustees of the
Vanderhood estate in 1737 . In 1756 Chesterfield County taxed
Branch on fourteen tithables.
In August 1758 Thomas bought 600 acres from John Quarles. This
was part of two patents that had belonged to Joseph Wilkinson
[6648.2.2.1/S]. He gave the 600 acres to Henry Branch —
probably nephew Henry Branch [1662.1.3] — for “love and
affection” in November 1762.
Thomas died in Chesterfield County [30 Oct 1765 / 1 Aug 1766 ]
and left his property to the eldest sons of his eight sisters.
On 3 January 1767, the eight nephews and six wives (the two
Goode nephews were still single) sold their Chesterfield County
inheritance: 159 acres to Leonard Ward [884.4.5], 219 acres to
Seth Ward [884.1.1.1], 102 acres to Josiah Tatum [1600.4.4.1],
133 acres to Christopher Branch [1662.1.1], 102 acres to
Thomas Branch Willson [3698.1.3.1.1], and 493 acres to Branch
Tanner [3522.1.3.1].
These 15-party deeds helped historians identify the Branch
descendants. The same eight cousins inherited a 390-acre tract
on Beaverpond Branch in Amelia County. Seven conveyed their
interest in the property for £300 to Branch Tanner [3522.1.3.1]
in a deed dated 1766."
