     John Cheyne was born, 12 February 1840, in Scotland.1,2

A John Chayne and James Cheyne, both born in Scotland, were found on the 1880 US Census, in Patterson, Passaic, New Jersey. And there was a John and William Cheyne on the same ship in 1872. They were probably closely related.

John Cheyne married Isabella Brown about 1871. The couple was listed as having been married for twenty nine years on the 1900 US Census.3

John Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 18 April 1872, at Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was a steerage passenger aboard the Olympus, out of Liverpool. He was 28 years old, a laborer, a native of Scotland and was intended to stay in the United States. He was listed on page 6 and there was a William Cheyne (19123) aboard the same ship on page 5. They were probably closely related.4

John Cheyne immigrated in 1872, to the USA. The 1900 US Census listed him as having immigrated in 1872.3

John Cheyne and Mrs. Jessie Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 13 October 1879, at New York, New York, USA. Also present were their children Tom Cheyne, Harry Cheyne and Jessie I. Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Ethiopia, out of Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland. John and Jessie were listed as 37 and 34, and Gent and Lady. All were said to have been subjects of Scotland and were Cabin Class passengers. All the children's ages were two years older than they should have been.5

John Cheyne was listed on the 1880 United States Census, at 142 Jensey Street, in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA. He was head of household. Also present were his children, Thomas Cheyne, Harry Cheyne and Jessie Cheyne. All the children were born in the US. Isabella was born in Scotland. Both of his parents were listed as having been born in Scotland.1

Jno. Cheyne and Mrs. Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 24 September 1888, at New York, New York, USA. Also present were their children Thos. Cheyne, Harry Cheyne and Jessie I. Cheyne. They were first cabin passengers on the steamship Devonia, out of Glasgow, Scotland and were bound for the USA. John was listed as a manufacturer.6

John Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 6 October 1894, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of First Class Passengers aboard the City of Rome out of Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland. He was 52 years of age, a manufacturer, carried three piece of luggage, a citizen of United States, a native of Scotland and resided in Patterson, New Jersey, his destination. He boarded in Glasgow.7

John Cheyne listed on the 1895 New Jersey State Census, in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA. He was head of household. Also in the household were Isabella Cheyne, Thomas Cheyne, Harry Cheyne and Jessie Cheyne. He was listed as foreign born and between the ages of 20 and 60 years.8

John Cheyne was listed on the 1900 United States Census, at 130 Ward Street, in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA. He was head of household and a capitalist. Also present were his children, Thomas Cheyne, Henry Cheyne and Jessie Cheyne. The family owned their home.3

John Cheyne was listed on the 1910 United States Census at 4250 Franklin Street, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was a boarder at a boarding house, kept by Catherine R. McKine. He was listed as age 64, employed as a cloth goods salesman. He was said to have immigrated in 1872. He was listed as having been married for thirty eight years, but his wife was not present. He and his parents were born in Scotland.9

John Cheyne died 10 February 1911 of endocarditis at 4472 Franklin in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was a manufacturer and was born 12 February 1840 in Scotland. His parents were not identified. The informant was ??? Norris, 4670 Franklin.10,11,12,13
