Alexander Cheyne

M, #756, b. about 1650
FatherJohn Cheyne b. a 1600
MotherMagdalene Irvine b. c 1620
Alexander Cheyne was born about 1650. Alexander was the probable son of John Cheyne and Magdalene Irvine. The Register of Baptisms of Ellon Parish are void from 1650-1680. An entry on page 70 from the above reads "This Register of Baptisms is wanting from 15 September 1650 to April 1680".1

The parentage of Alexander Cheyne has been a subject of research for over 20 years. The possibilities were narrowed to three, possibly four. 1) Richard Cheyne (3160) and Helen Bannerman in Ellon Parish; 2) William Cheyne of Keithen (5449); 3) John Cheyne of Finzies (2058) or 4) John Cheyne of ___ (4083) and Magdalene Irvine, also in Ellon. I further believe the two Johns to have been the same person.
The least compelling case is for Richard. He did not appear to have been a person of the station of that of Alexander. The Ellon Parish Register of Baptisms is blank from 1650-1680, so proof is not possible. Alexander's would be siblings do not appear in any of Alexander's Register entries.
William of Keithen is a very compelling case. Alexander may have been a younger son, who would not inherit or possess the family property, but still someone who was in great demand of being a witness. And, he appears to have returned to Keithen after the death of his would be father.
Finally, I believe, Alexander to have been the son of John Cheyne of ___ and Magdalene Irvine. His father, John, probably later became 'of Finzies'. Alexander's would be brother, Francis, will in 1666 have a sasine for a very large tract of land, previously owned by Adam Urquhart, uncle of Alexander's future wife, Jean. He also had an aunt Lady Helen Urquhart of the same family.1

Alexander (756), William (1515), Jean (1526), Jean (4414), Samuel (1528), Margaret (4409) and Patrick (4423) Cheynes were probably closely related.1

Alexander Cheyne married Jean Urquhart. Alexander Cheyne (756) was important early Cheyne. He married Jean Urquhart (760) before 1685. She was of the family of the Urquharts of Cromarty. It is very likely that they had children before 1685. The earliest record of him was on the fourth page of the Fyvie Parish Register of Baptisms which began in 1685. Witnesses of the baptisms of their children included: James Urquhart of Knockleith (4529), Patrick Urquhart (4530), doctor in Aberdeen , John Gordon of Gight (4436) [N.B.--these two Urquharts probably were her uncles and John Gordon's wife her aunt], John Gordon of Erdo (4408) and Alexander Wilson (4800) in 1696, he was imprimis tenant to Laird of Gight). These Urquharts were related to the Gordons of Gight by marriage. Alexander Cheyne and Jean Urquhart were tenants on Gight property.
Another witness was Mr. William Cheyne (752), schoolmaster of Auchredy, Mill of Cairnbanno. What was his connection?
Alexander Cheyne and Jean Urquhart resided in Fyvie Parish from before 1685 to 1694, Methlick Parish 1694 to 1698, Auchredy Parish 1701 to 1705, and Monquhitter Parish after 1705.1
