Notes

The 300th anniversary of the Bull family in SC was celebrated Apr 12, 1970 at Sheldon Episcopal Church near Beaufort, SC. The Society of the Descendants of Stephen Bull held a reunion following services at the ruins of this historic church.

Stephen Bull, of Kingshurst Hall, Warwickshire, England, sailed from London in August 1669, as Deputy Governor for Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper. The sailing vessel, The Carolina, landed on Bull's Island January 10, 1670, carrying the first group of English settlers in South Carolina. Stephen settled at Ashley Hall, on the Ashley River, near Charleston.

The church at Sheldon was built in 1753, burned by the British in 1780; rebuilt, it was burned again in 1865 by the invading Federal troops. A handsome silver Communion Service, presented to the church by Governor William Bull, is still in use.

"The Carolina" is the ship shown on the reverse of the Tricentennial Medallion and on which William Cockfield came to America, his grandson married into the Bull family.

William HURST Sr.

ABT 1780 - ABT 1839

ID Number: I102817

  • RESIDENCE: of Loudoun and Montgomery and Wythe and Pulaski Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1780
  • DEATH: ABT 1839, Pulaski Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3722]

Family 1 : Rachel CUMMINS
  1. +William Joseph HURST Jr.
  2.  Franklin HURST
  3.  Jesse Thompson HURST

Notes

"William was in the 1810 Montgomery County census, then in the 1820 and 1830 Wythe censuses. He lived on Big Reed Island Creek in what's now Pulaski, buying land from Francis Allison and William Lindsey. His estate was inventoried in Pulaski on 5 Dec 1839."

All three of his known children who were alive in 1880 - William Joseph Hurst, Franklin Hurst, and Lucinda Hurst Gardner - listed their father as having been born in Virginia.

William did indeed have 3 boys and 2 girls, all born in VA or MD. Besides the four mentioned above, there was Catherine, who married Eden Harris. (Lucinda married Matthew Gardner.) Whether there was "possibly one more" child is an open question; it has been suggested that Samuel Hurst, who married another, unrelated, Lucinda Hurst (my great grandaunt) in Wythe County, was possibly another son of William and Rachel. Y-chromosome DNA tests of direct male descendants of William and Samuel might prove or disprove this, and also determine whether one or both lines are related to us "Shenandoah Hursts."

Notes

"Major Walker laid out the town of Calhoun from a large tract of land on the north side of the Hiwassee River given him by the national government, naming it for the noted South Carolinian, John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War.
The County of McMinn was organized in his home in 1820, at which time he was elected the first coroner. A family of mixed blood, the Walkers were educated in the east, were wealthy, influential, and prominent in Indian affairs.

John Jack Walker, II, known to many of the whites as Chief Jack, from whom Bradley County's beautiful Walker Valley takes its name, was prominent among the Cherokee leaders who lived in the area later to become Bradley County. Here stood his handsome two story log home until it was razed in 1907 by George Fain, a son in-law of Pryor Lea, one of early Cleveland's most noted citizens. Fain erected in its place a commodious residence.. And near this spot lies all that remains of Jack Walker, who was buried in the northeast corner of his orchard after being fatally wounded by another Cherokee named James Foreman in an ambush on the Cleveland-Spring Place Road a mile west of Muskrat Springs, now known as the Cedar Springs. The old house was sold to a man named Muchler or Mullins, who built a house and barn of the logs, according to the late Emma Hampton, one time historian of the Ocoee Chapter, D.A.R. in a paper titled "An Indian Romance." Miss Hampton said in her paper that Jack Walker's full name was John Osment Walker.

"Chief Jack" was a large and extremely handsome man who habitually dressed himself in the fine broadcloth worn by the gentlemen of his time." [S2706]
