Notes

William Hurst 6 Apr 1803 - 29 Jun 1891 Lindsey (Pine Creek) Cemetery, Carroll Co Va

"John Perry Alderman's Annotated 1850 Census states that William and Susannah Wright Hurst (Family #164) Had 12 children many of whom were born in Pulaski Co where they lived for years before moving to Carroll Co.

A problem is that if you look at family 164 in the 1850 Carroll census, it's headed by Joseph Hurst. Alderman points out that he is really William. There is a William and Susannah Hurst in that census, but they are William Hurst, the son of Thomas Hurst and Jemima Breeding of Pulaski, and Susannah Nester. They soon moved to Mercer County.

The real Joseph Hurst was in Wythe County in 1850; I believe he was the Carroll County William's brother. I've discussed this on the Hurst RootsWeb message board and the Hurst mailing list."

"William's 1894 death record said he was born in Pulaski County. Of course, Pulaski didn't exist in 1803, so he may have been born in Wythe or Montgomery. Or he may have actually been born in MD. If not, William and Rachel wandered around between Northern VA, SW VA, and MD. Birth locations in census reports and death records are often wrong. In the 1850 Carroll census, William is shown as Joseph. He was probably also called Joseph in early Wythe/Pulaski deeds, so I'm not the only one who lists him as William Joseph Hurst."

William Joseph Hurst was the father of the second Jesse T. Hurst.

Philip PENDLETON

ABT 1704 - 1778

ID Number: I61911

Father: Henry PENDLETON
Mother: Mary Bishop TAYLOR

Family 1 : Martha RUFFIN?
  1.  Daughter PENDLETON
  2.  Daughter PENDLETON
  3.  Daughter PENDLETON
  4.  Daughter PENDLETON
  5.  Daughter PENDLETON

Notes

According to the Bible of Judge Edmund Pendleton, his brother, Philip Pendleton had five daughters. Since this is stated in the Judge's handwriting, there can be no doubt of it. The Philip Pendleton who had 15 children (if there really were such a Philip!) was evidently another Philip. The names of the five daughters of Philip Pendleton (1704-1778) have not certainly been identified; one record names them as: Mrs. Croxton, Mrs. Perryman, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Minor and Mrs. Gaines. The name of his wife has been suggested as Martha Ruffin, but of this there is no proof.

Volume IV Chapter X The Pendleton Family. Third Generation.
"III. Philip Pendleton((3)) (Henry((2)), Philip((1))), b. about 1704 or 1705. The record of his residence, with the names of some of his children, is lost. He probably lived in Caroline County, Va., because he is mentioned in the only record of that county not burned during the Civil War, as witness in a suit in 1768, and as having travelled 30 miles to attend Court. His wife is supposed to have been named Martha -, because of a deed of sale to his step father, Edward Watkyns, in Culpeper County, Va., signed by Philip Pendleton and his wife, Martha. He is said to have had fifteen children, five of whom were daughters, all married, according to the records of Judge Pendleton's bible. Of these five daughters:"
