Elizabeth ROUSBY

1751 - ____

ID Number: I60203

  • RESIDENCE: Calvert & "Sotterly" St. Mary's Co. MD
  • BIRTH: 1751, Calvert Co. Maryland
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S2239]
Father: John ROUSBY of Rousby Hall
Mother: Ann FRESBY

Family 1 : George III PLATER Gov. of Maryland
  1.  Thomas Addison PLATER
  2. +George IV PLATER
  3. +Ann PLATER

Notes

"Elizabeth Rousby Plater was born in 1751, the only child and sole heir of John Rousby and Ann Rousby Fitzhugh of Rousby Hall in Calvert County. Elizabeth, like her mother Ann, was dramatic, remarkably capable, and an extraordinarily beautiful woman. Although only 13 when she wed George Plater III, and 14 when her first child was born, she has been described as a superior manager of the plantation household, generously hospitable, with a forceful self-assurance. It is said that upon arriving at Sotterley, Elizabeth gathered up all the silver in her husband's household, shipped it to England, and had it remade into table service (silverware). The significant architectural changes that transformed Sotterley in the 18th century from a simple planter's home to an elegant aristocratic estate were no doubt done under the guiding eye of Elizabeth.

There is an interesting story about Elizabeth and the diplomat and legislator from Pennsylvania, Governeur Morris. Morris was thrown from his carriage and trampled by his horses, and suffered a severe leg injury. After his fall, he was carried to the Plater home where his leg was amputated. With great kindness and her usual hospitality, Elizabeth nursed Morris back to health. Her affection and devotion during his convalescence raised more than a few eyebrows, but it is believed that their tenderness towards one another was rooted in genuine sincerity on her part and gratitude on his.

Elizabeth had six children. Her oldest, Rebecca with her large grey eyes and small yet graceful stature, was so astonishingly beautiful, she was referred to as "The White Rose of Sotterley" by her contemporaries. She spent considerable time in her youth with her grandmother, Ann Rousby Fitzhugh, at Rousby Hall. Head strong, self-assured and dramatic like her mother and grandmother, Rebecca fell in love with the distinguished revolutionary war general, Uriah Forrest. Her mother was against the marriage, thinking Forrest unworthy, yet when Rebecca declared she would never marry and would live waiting for death; Elizabeth had them married immediately, without ceremony.

Elizabeth had four sons, George IV, who inherited Sotterley upon the death of his parents, John Rousby Plater, Thomas Plater, and Edward who died in infancy. Elizabeth's youngest child and second daughter, Ann, was tall and stately like her mother, reserved and elegant. Ann married Philip Barton Key, the uncle of Francis Scott Key, author of America's national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner". It is Ann who is said to have etched the name "Key" into Sotterley's drawing room window, upon receiving her diamond ring from her future husband.

In addition to raising five children, and managing a busy plantation household which included more than forty slaves, Elizabeth traveled with her husband in his various political activities, and entertained distinguished callers to the Plater home, including their friend George Washington."
