daughter of Peregrine Fresby. Ann: Widow first of John Rousby of Rousby Hall, Calvert Co., MD.
"Ann Rousby Fitzhugh was the subject of a three act play, entitled "Mistress Fitzhugh", written in l910. The play captures the historical incidents during the American Revolution, when Ann, in her nightgown, outsmarts the British soldiers who intrude upon her estate in the middle of the night in the summer of 1781, taking her husband, Colonel Fitzhugh, prisoner. It is by Ann's ingenuity that Colonel Fitzhugh is released. Drama seemed to be a frequent visitor to Ann. After the death of her husband John Rousby, Ann was aggressively pursued by Colonel Fitzhugh. When Ann refused his marriage proposal, Fitzhugh kidnapped the then infant Elizabeth, and held her over the river threatening to drop her in, until Ann succumbed." [S2342] [S2239]
