Hathaway's Register says that Joseph came from William of NC,
while TN Cousins says he came from Joseph of MD.
Joseph & Eliz spent 16 years in Surry County having babies so
there is bound to be taxes paid, deeds or something. Some clue
as to who was Joseph's father and maybe even a Simmons family
close by.
1/17/01: We do have definite confirmation of the Harrisons back
to Albemarle Parish (all children christened in the Albemarle
records appear later in Will of Jos Harrison in Brunswick Va)..
except Mary who probably died early. What we don't have is
confirmation back to Maryland (or back the next generation) from
Albemarle Parrish, MD. So we're still trying to confirm what
Worth has written in TN Cousins that the Joseph Harrison from
Brunswick Va came from MD."

Indenture made the 25th day of August, 1760, between Jehua
PEEBLES, Junr., and Cate, his wife, and Joseph HARRISON of
Sussex County, for 100 pounds, conveying 300 acres, being the
land purchased by Jehua PEEBLES, Junr. of Jehu PEEBLES, Sen. by
deed dated the 22nd day of December, 1755. Signed by Jehua
PEEPLES and Catey PEEBLES. No witnesses. Indenture was
acknowledged in Court on August 25, 1760, by Jehua PEEBLES and
Catey PEEBLES, and Catey PEEBLES, wife of the said Jehua
PEEBLES, relinquished her right of dower.
A month earlier (28 Jul 1760), Henry SIMMONS and his wife,
Susannah, sell land to John Bailey. On 24 Nov 1760, they sell
land to William Merrett.
There are other Harrisons and Simmons mentioned in Deed Book 6:

Just wish I could get my hands on Hathaway's work to see whether
HE said (as abstracted by Ray) that our Joseph who md Elizabeth
Simmons was son of Jonathan and Ann Harrison. Jonathon owned
land on N side of Albermarle River in 1701 and Ray said he was
close neighbors with Argyle Simmons. Argall/Argyle was father of
John Simmons who married Bridget. John is my candidate to be
Elizabeth Simmon's father, but only 'cause Ray said about our
Joseph who died 28 May 1763 in Surry Co: "The Simmons family, to
which Argall Simmons belonged, lived in St. Andrews Parish in
Surry, VA and perhaps acted as the magnet that drew Joseph, son
of Jonathan, back to that part of the country before his death".
From Gene Pool 12/27/00 MP's note: wrong Joseph; birth date &
place ok, but wrong wife and his will was proved in 1763.

The more I study the evidence that we do have, the more certain
I am that our Joseph is not descended from Joseph and Verlinda
Harrison. I went to Maryland to try to determine if their son
Joseph stayed there, but have found no conclusive evidence. I
think that would be the best way to determine if their son
Joseph could be the one in VA. And I doubt that he descends from
Jonathan Harrison of NC, unless Jonathan left VA after Joseph
was married, as the evidence does not show that he came "back to
VA from NC in his later years".
The names of his children do, however, fit in with the
descendants of Daniel Harrison of Surry Co.
