Mother: Hartwell "Harty" HODGES |
JOHN HODGES DRAKE, SR. .. John Hodges Drake, Sr. died in Auburn,
Alabama on Sunday the 11th day of December 1859, in the
ninety-third year of his age. The deceased retained his health
and physical powers in an uncommon degree until the 1st day of
December 1858 when he had the misfortune to receive a fall by
which two of his ribs were fractured and his system, generally,
so shocked as to render him entirely helpless for the remained
of his life... John Hodges Drake was born in Edgecombe (now
Nash) County, North Carolina, January 29th, 1767. Although he
was too young to take part in the struggle for Independence he
was reared in the days that tried men’s soul’s and with the
example of his father and elder brothers, who periled their
lives in the cause, he early imbibed those principles of
patriotism and love of right and justice, that characterized his
life. The writer has often heard him recount many stirring
incidents of revolutionary times and loved to see his noble
countenance lit up with the fire of patriotism as he would
relate them. One incident especially at which he was an eye
witness, seemed to warm his whole soul with fire. It was the
attack on his father’s house in 1781 by a Captain Beard and his
band of Tories, briefly alluded to in Wheeler’s History of North
Carolina. In this attack his father, a brother and two
neighbors, contended hand to hand with Captain Beard and his
company of over fifty tories until they were overcome and cut
down, their bodies covered with wounds. Major Drake lived in his
native county, Nash (formed from Edgecombe in 1777), for more
Than seventy-five years... He served in the North Carolina
Legislature in the House of Commons from 1792 to 1796, and in
the Senate in 1800 and 1805. He was for more than thirty years
Clerk of the Superior Court of Nash County... Major Drake was a
Master Mason. He was initiated into the Order in the town of
Halifax, North Carolina near seventy years ago... sixty years
ago he made a profession of religion and was baptized in Swift
Creek, near Maine’s Chapel, Nash County, North Carolina ...
After his death on Sunday his body reposed in the house of his
son-in-law Maj. J.F. White, where he died, until the Tuesday
following. On Tuesday morning an appropriate funeral discourse
was pronounced by the Rev. MB. Hardin, Pastor of the Baptist
Church at Auburn. His remains were then taken in charge by the
Masonic Fraternity and borne to the depot where the last sad
honors, peculiar to the Order, were performed. it was then
placed on the cars and attended by a number of his children and
friends, it was safely conveyed to the house of his son, Dr.
John G.F. Drake, Nash County, North Carolina, arriving there on
Thursday evening... From: “Marriage and Death Notices From the
South Western Baptist Newspaper”
(Alabama and Mississippi).
Writing to his half-nephew, Benjamin M. Drake, of Washington,
Mississippi, from Auburn, Alabama, on Sunday, 11 December 1854,
Dr. John Hodges Drake said: "I will give you the tradition of
the Drake family in this country, as I received it from old
Matthew Drake, who was a merchant and trader in Virginia. He
said about two hundred years ago or more, three young men by the
name of Drake came into the mouth of the James River, from Old
England.
One of them settled in Southhampton County, Virginia; one of
them to the north, say Rhode Island, and the other went south,
say to South Carolina.
They claimed to be descendants of Sir Francis Drake who sailed
around the world. From that branch of the family that settled
in Southhampton sprang all the Drakes that peopled North
Carolina and Virginia. Out of fifteen brothers and sisters, I am
the only one living, being 85 yrs old the 29th of last January,
born 1766."
Dr. John Hodges Drake served as Justice for Nash County in
1797-98, 1803-07, 1810, 1823, 1836-39, and 1950-53. In 1792-98,
he and Joseph Arrington and others represented Nash County in
the North Carolian legislature. He also represented Nash County
in the Senate 1800-1805. He was a physician at Hilliardston as
were his four sons.
