Cheyne and Jessie Birnie Cheyne were listed as children in the household of John Cheyne and his wife, Jeannie Cheyne on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 54 Esslemont Avenue, in Aberdeen, Old Machar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 8, born in Aberdeen, Aberdeen, and a scholar.1

The attached is a edited studio photograph of both the adopted and natural children of John Cheyne, circa 1900. Apparently John and his wife Jeanie were cut out. From the left, seated, John Sutherland Birnie, James Tulloch, William James (in uniform), Jessie Birnie and Robert McKenzie Cheynes.2

William J. Cheyne was listed on the 1901 British Census at Military Barracks, Castlehill, in Aberdeen, East, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. A William Cheyne was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders Infantry. He was listed as 18 years of age, born in Old Aberdeen and a private. William Cheyne (15298) was probably him.3

William James Cheyne may have died in the Boer War.4
